I get so freaking emotionally upset over dumb money things. Exchanged some money today and didn’t check the exchange rate, and lost $500 over a couple seconds. It feels so dumb losing money over nothing, even if it’s so little in the grand scheme of things. How do ya’ll deal with this? Ffs

How do you lose $$ like that? Just exchange it back?

funnylike

That’s another $500

Don’t be too hard on yourself about it. I believe a good amount of us would get irritated and upset over this. I don’t think it’s about money things specifically but just the underlying fact that it could have been avoided so simply, so we beat ourselves up over not taking a second to double check. You’re at McKinsey, you’re smart, that money will come back in some way shape or form!

likesmart

Happens to all of us. Don’t bother wasting another few seconds thinking about it

Because we’re not doing dumb things with our money…?

funny

Why do you think you get emotionally disrupted over stuff like this? You must be forgetting yourself and the position you are in. To be able to lose $500 and call it so little in the grand scheme of things is a blessing. There are people in the US who would not be able to eat or might even get evicted if they were short $500 on any given month. Sure, it's a blunder on your part and it might be annoying but you get to continue your life as it was. This is merely a reminder of how blessed you are that this is a mere annoyance and not a panic-inducing experience.

You’re 100% right. Just a tendency to beat myself up over blunders like this that shouldn’t happen

Fishes honest opinion needed. Me and My so presently live in Arkansas, living in our first home with a child 4 year, both of us recently changed our jobs and have HHI ~ 420K, current mortgage 1600/month. We are looking to move to Dallas and thinking of buying a house ~996K with a 15% down. Questions -
1. Should we go for house of that budget? We can afford, but asking based on market.
2. Should we down 15% or just 5% ? Or go for 20% ?
*Getting a rate lock 4.25% 🤞🏼

This is a little embarrassing… I don’t know anything about investing. I come from a low income / immigrant background and never received financial education. Just recently learned the difference between an TR and Roth IRA 😓 I have started to contribute $$ in my 401K. I am 27 and only have like $15K in my Vanguard account feel like I am so behind. Can someone recommend good resource/advise to learn the basics?

Does anyone know if the 10% penalty and if taxes are waived on a death of a beneficiary? A friend of mine’s 17 year old pass away. I was wondering due to the circumstance, is there any way he can get around paying extra money by doing a 1035 exchange, rollover, withdrawal. Anything out there? Suggestion are welcome.

I wish I wasn’t adaptable. Humans aspire for a greater level of comfort and once achieved, adopt that as their new baseline. Because of this, somebody making $100k cannot simply comfortably revert back to a $50k lifestyle. The slow growth of personal wealth isn’t noticed as ideated. Instead, we are never satisfied.

Ex-consultant now in marketing. Used to be an avid follower here and got great insights on companies when trying to exit consulting so thought I’d try here for advice. Outside of FAANG, what are good large CA-based tech companies that provide good pay, WLB, and culture? DD has great people and WLB, but pay is low and you’re not given the tools and resources to succeed + truly make an impact. Google and Apple are ideal but need backups. Like is Salesforce still good? A company along those lines.

I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?

My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at
Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.

L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.
