Don’t be embarrassed!! Lots of free resources out there - I love personalfinanceclub on IG, mirrors a lot of the advice in the picture posted above. Has a bunch of posts about catching up but you’re young and you have plenty of time.
General advice: put as much in your 401k as you can - ideally max it out if that’s attainable to you but if not put it as high as you possibly can. save an emergency fund of 3 months of expenses in cash, pay off high interest debt first and when investing buy the market (I.e., index funds). That should be the last step though once you have all the other things sorted out. Good luck! And good for you for seeking out the information.
When I was 27, I had $0 in investments. If you go to a financial planner/advisor, the basics they will tell you right off the bat are first take care of your life basics, pay off debt, take care of any insurance you need, and then put as much as you can afford towards your retirement. When I was 28 and started my first 401k, I started at only 4%. It took my YEARS to increase that to 6. Then 10. Today I’m at 17%, and I’m 41. I know it seems small in the beginning, but start somewhere. Earlier the better.
Thank you so much! I appreciate your response. I have started to create a list of resources and prioritize what I need to do to get started
If it you feel any better, I learned and started investing when I was 36! 🙈🙈
I was super financially illiterate from a family that was always in the red. I found the book Simple Path to Wealth to be a great explainer
Thank you both! Just ordered the book. Reading this gives me reassurance that it’s not late. I appreciate your response
Watch these two guys on YouTube!
- Graham Stephan
- Andrei Jikh
I’d look in to some of Graham’s older videos (maybe ‘18 - ‘19 period as, his newer stuff is more niche)
They make great videos on personal finance, at a beginner level, covering:
- Emergency funds, 401Ks, IRA accounts, etc
- Applying for credit cards, and how to RESPONSIBLY build credit
- How to build an investment portfolio that’s within YOUR risk tolerance
- How to responsibly pay off and manage debt
Keep in mind that their word isn’t the law. But it really helped me start thinking about the right things when i graduated college.

Hey 👋 YAY YOU for asking for help to start investing. Can tell you’re going to do great! I was similar and started with my Accenture 401k while paying off student loans then cars and kept working toward all the others (college funds for kids, post-tax mutual funds, etc). Start with your 401k and get the match from your company. You’ve got this!
