Perhaps their politics? Are these people of a particular political bent? Bashing California and NYC (and major metropolitan areas) has become the favorite pastime of a certain political ilk.
Also, it appears that being a Kardashian is sufficient to run for high political office. :-)
I grew up in LA. Left the state, came back for a few years while my wife went to law school at Stanford. Moved to a much lower-taxed environment now and my wife is considering job opportunities in California. I can't say I ever want to move back. There is too much group think. I worked at PayPal and some of the other tech firms. Unless you very closely identify with their politics and ideology, it is the most controlled speech environment I've ever seen. My dad went to UC Berkeley at the height of the free speech movement, now unless you espouse exactly what they want you to, they will do anything they can to remove your voice, some of the most intolerant people I've ever met in my life.
The homeless issues are like no other place I've seen and a direct result of the politics and policies at play here. You get what you reward. There are over 50k homeless people in LA county alone.
California was a paradise but the people in charge have ruined it over the last 40 years of my life. The regulations strangle businesses. At some point, if it isn't already happening, businesses will find friendlier places for them. When that happens, the jobs will go with them.
I loved the climate, hated the traffic, property costs were artificially high because of the onerous regulations, and if you are illegal, you likely have more rights and benefits than if you are legally here. Commit a crime and if you are illegal, they'll likely just let you walk. That is how I was attacked and required almost 100 stitches to sew my abdomen up from a knife attack by one of our friendly, wouldn't harm anyone, illegal/undocumented aliens. Can't bring back my cousin either who was killed by a similar drunk illegal/undocumented alien who had been released 3 times before.
If you have kids, schools generally suck. As for how good the environment is, ask them why they built one of the most expensive schools in the US (I think something like $400mil) on a hazardous waste dump. Google LA USD Belmont. Just more examples of governmental idiocy at work there.
The income taxes don't even begin to cover all the taxes and fees you get hit with. California is like living in the world's largest HOA. If you have any experience with homeowners associations, you'll know how bad this can be.
I loved California growing up. Politics are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The state is the epitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions. California prides itself on how forward-thinking it is, and wants to be a role model for how things should be everywhere. Why are so many people fleeing the state? Ask yourself why HP, Tesla, Oracle, CBRE, have bolted from the state. Think about the HP one. HP had its roots forever there. Yet the state and local governments don't seem to care. Heads are in the sand.
Sorry for a long sort of rant but I spent over 40 years in the state and watching its decline has been incredibly painful. Hopefully not too late to turn it around.
Born and raised and agree with all of this. Stay away!
San Diego is a great city, and the people telling you otherwise are most likely talking out of their a$$.
Do the math and model out what your offer means when adjusted for COL. Account for growth potential in the new role vs you current - if the numbers make sense, you should have no reservations. As a city, San Diego is fantastic!
I’ve lived in 11 states and San Diego was paradise. It’s a toss up between that and Washington DC for me. I didn’t find it to be very liberal but was in the military while living there.
Amazing weather, great museums, zoo, beaches and friendly people. Loved it both single and with kids. I’m more of a fast paced, east coast rat race kind of person and the mellow lifestyle was the hardest part. But I do miss it!
I tow the line between DC and SD being my favorite every day!
Native Californian here - San Diego is a terrific city and a lot more laid back than LA (and cheaper). I’d suggest to come and visit to see for yourself. Like others have said, CA is a huge state so of course it’s going to have issues and less desirable places to live, but there are lots of good places as well. Yes it costs more to live here, but it’s the price you pay for awesome weather all year and tons of culture and activities/entertainment. + low humidity compared to the east coast/south 😊
I don’t know what idiots you have been talking to but San Diego is a wonderful city! It’s beautiful, great night life and restaurants, very family friendly and not too far from la . I loved it there! You won’t regret it!
Texas is less expensive with lower taxes - but then you’re in Texas.

At some point though, the water drought is going to make people pick up and leave the west coast.

Yeah, it’s going to be a really bad problem within a few more years. Already is, people just don’t realize it.
It might become quite a fire with the impending drought and then dormant tectonic plates ready to trigger another quake
San Diego is the best city in the us by far.
San Diego is one of the best cities in the country! It is the only city in Cali worth a damn

LA is much better. Much more variety
Places that are worth living in are expensive there is a reason it costs what it does
Come to New Jersey
San Diego isn’t like the rest of California but regardless CA is the best state in the country.

San Diego is a beautiful city, lived there for 15 years. Expensive (like everyplace in California). It’s great if you love weather within a 10 degree band year round, but if you like 4 seasons you will get bored with it. Traffic is bad and always getting worse, not as bad only as LA or SF so they will say it’s not bad…. But it is. The only other thing I can say is on a business front, it is a bit slow. So depending on the work that you do it could be good or bad.

VP 2 - We live in North County and my two kids went to public schools but they ended up in Princeton and Stanford (one with 50% scholarship). So you cannot just blame the school districts. I don’t believe best of the best schools are in North County but they still made it to top ranked universities. La Jolla, Poway, San Diequito and Carmel Valley area have even better schools than where we live. Plus if you live in California, you have access some of the top public universities in the country with in-state tuition.
It’s the sunshine tax. Honestly if you want to move to SD, why not?
I live in CA and I love it here. But I’m also aware of its pros and cons. Cost-wise, in the short term, you’re right. It’s not that different from other HCOL cities.
It’s more about what you want to do long term. If you want to live in California for a few years to get that experience and then move somewhere else, it’s totally a reasonable move.
If you’re moving here with the objective to put down roots and establish a life here, then I think you have to think about things more seriously. Housing is very expensive which means, assuming you’re doing this on your own without family help, it will take longer to save up and buy a house. The public schools in the major cities are shit so you need to pay for private school for any future children. CA has one of the highest state income taxes and one that affects even modest professional incomes, and it is projected to go even higher as the state loses residents. That’s why people are advising you not to go.
I’ve already established my life in CA, so I’m not leaving. It’s sunk costs. And I still think the pros outweigh the cons, at least for myself. That’s the situation for a lot of other folks too.
However, if I was starting all over again, would I choose California where everything is more stacked against you? Probably not. That’s what you have to consider. What do you envision for your life? And where can you best achieve that vision?
I transferred to San Diego from DC. Do it. It’s great. Yeah expensive and the dollar doesn’t go as far but…there’s a reason so many people want to live in this state. Sun. Beach. Moderate temperature. Chill culture. Beautiful people.
My perspective is probably different as I’m from Europe and only studied 6 months in San Diego - but that experience was 👌 Chill place
San Diego is an incredible city. Have the ones telling you not to go even been there?
Born and raised in San Diego. I now own a home 1 mile from the beach on a moderate salary ($160k combined hubs & I). I absolutely love it here. It’s beautiful every damn day, which is so motivating to get outside and live my life because I love where I live! It’s expensive, yeah, but people make it out here on all kinds of salaries.
San Diego is the best city if your young and single. Such a fun place to live and so much to do. If you’re wanting to start a family, I don’t think this is the place. But it’s amazing and my favorite place to live!

Here now for my first time. Really enjoying it so far. Rented a house for the week with extended family and seems a great city in a lot of ways.
