Any Bain recruiters in here?
Am I doing a mistake? Going from PwC to Accenture for $45K more (113 Vs 158), and a role that’s better aligned with what I was doing before joining & what I want to be doing? I joined PwC for the experience and the exit opportunity it can provide me in the future, but it’s hard not to accept this role from Accenture! Decision need to be made by end of this week….

Perhaps their politics? Are these people of a particular political bent? Bashing California and NYC (and major metropolitan areas) has become the favorite pastime of a certain political ilk.
Also, it appears that being a Kardashian is sufficient to run for high political office. :-)
I grew up in LA. Left the state, came back for a few years while my wife went to law school at Stanford. Moved to a much lower-taxed environment now and my wife is considering job opportunities in California. I can't say I ever want to move back. There is too much group think. I worked at PayPal and some of the other tech firms. Unless you very closely identify with their politics and ideology, it is the most controlled speech environment I've ever seen. My dad went to UC Berkeley at the height of the free speech movement, now unless you espouse exactly what they want you to, they will do anything they can to remove your voice, some of the most intolerant people I've ever met in my life.
The homeless issues are like no other place I've seen and a direct result of the politics and policies at play here. You get what you reward. There are over 50k homeless people in LA county alone.
California was a paradise but the people in charge have ruined it over the last 40 years of my life. The regulations strangle businesses. At some point, if it isn't already happening, businesses will find friendlier places for them. When that happens, the jobs will go with them.
I loved the climate, hated the traffic, property costs were artificially high because of the onerous regulations, and if you are illegal, you likely have more rights and benefits than if you are legally here. Commit a crime and if you are illegal, they'll likely just let you walk. That is how I was attacked and required almost 100 stitches to sew my abdomen up from a knife attack by one of our friendly, wouldn't harm anyone, illegal/undocumented aliens. Can't bring back my cousin either who was killed by a similar drunk illegal/undocumented alien who had been released 3 times before.
If you have kids, schools generally suck. As for how good the environment is, ask them why they built one of the most expensive schools in the US (I think something like $400mil) on a hazardous waste dump. Google LA USD Belmont. Just more examples of governmental idiocy at work there.
The income taxes don't even begin to cover all the taxes and fees you get hit with. California is like living in the world's largest HOA. If you have any experience with homeowners associations, you'll know how bad this can be.
I loved California growing up. Politics are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The state is the epitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions. California prides itself on how forward-thinking it is, and wants to be a role model for how things should be everywhere. Why are so many people fleeing the state? Ask yourself why HP, Tesla, Oracle, CBRE, have bolted from the state. Think about the HP one. HP had its roots forever there. Yet the state and local governments don't seem to care. Heads are in the sand.
Sorry for a long sort of rant but I spent over 40 years in the state and watching its decline has been incredibly painful. Hopefully not too late to turn it around.
Born and raised and agree with all of this. Stay away!

Don’t listen to the haters. I don’t want
to be dramatic, but… I’ve been to 30+ countries (on every continent except Australia), lived in Europe on three different occasions, traveled widely through Asia and Africa, ate sushi at Tsukiji, drank Guinness in Dublin, snacked on biltong in South Africa, and called six different US cities home… and if there one place on God’s green earth I would choose to live if I had total free choice, it would be San Diego.
This is like the recipe websites with 10k words of text before you get to only useful part
Born and raised in California. Moved to Texas for school (also had extended family from Texas) and have been here ever since.
There is ZERO chance I ever move back to California.
Anyone who spends a weekend in San Francisco and thinks they’d rather live there is, in my humble opinion, insane.
I’ve never been to a place with less culture than the Bay Area and couldn’t imagine spending my life in a white frat bro monoculture.
There are some extremely nice areas in San Diego I would consider living in if I could afford a $4m home but I can’t (thanks Deloitte) so it’s just not an option.
Could I afford a home inland somewhere? Yes of course, but then you are back to horrible schools and you miss out on the nice weather.
As a side note for those of you fleeing California, please for the love of god don’t move to Texas. We don’t want you here. And I say that as a homeowner that directly benefits from rising property values.
Seems like you should move to a deserted island with this get off my lawn attitude. Anyone who would choose to leave California for Texas clearly lived in a suburb of California not a real city.
Thanks for the long winded ness though….

Because it's HCOL and comes with a high tax burden. But it's also a desirable location, so you pay for it. I moved to a LCOL city and hate it and can't wait to go back to my "dumpster fire" previous city.

BCG1 don’t you consider Florida the East Coast? Lol
People complain about every state. Rightwingers will complain about NY and CA, Texas loves to brag about low taxes but then can't keep the heat on in winter storms, Florida is full of crazy people and politicians, AZ has no water and will be in uninhabitable in 15 years, IL has the most blatant corruption in politics in the whole country, OH has bad roads, etc etc.
You're not wrong: 40 mil people live there and the "mass exodus" trumped in certain media outlets is all talk and less fact.
You’re confusing population with domestic migration. More people are leaving CA than moving to CA. The influx of international immigrants and births outpacing deaths have always been enough to overcome that loss. That changed in 2020.
I live in San Diego and if you care about living in a place where it’s sunny and warm but not hot, you will be happy almost every day here. CA taxes suck, but San Diego is not nearly as expensive as T1 cities even when taking that into account (based on my experience)
I’m remote, it’s great! Ask your manager about it, remote is a much easier sell now than before covid

Lmao because people are jealous and those who have these comments usually have some heavily politically charged opinion.
I live here, it’s awesome. I have properties here. It’s awesome. I like my quality of life and the diversity. I wouldn’t change it.

Whoever complains about California and San Diego, has never been to California or San Diego.

Haters gonna hate. If the offer's good, go for it
Depends on th $$$. You better be making 150k+ to make the move to Cali worth it. Have exit oops to move to low COL city after vesting your stock options and can sell them in whatever tech company you are working for. My take on California and New York is this: if your rich - it's paradise! If your poor it blows! So be rich
EY8 there’s a difference between saying that the funding used to help people out of homelessness could be more effective vs. the homeless somehow living better than the middle class.
And obviously homelessness is not as simple as just matching demand to supply. Getting someone into some sort of shelter is just one aspect of curbing homelessness. What would you prefer CA do instead? Round them up and move them somewhere you can’t see? Throw them in prison? What’s the cost to house an inmate?
I'm moving to socal soon. It has a unique value prop, and you have to pay through the nose to have it.
L.A.
What qualifies as dumpster fire is relative to your own values, no? Would you say the folks that have warned you against moving there are similar?
California is a massive state, with a great deal of diversity in terms of geography, politics, culture, things to do—everything. Take a trip to San Diego for a weekend and see if you feel like you could be happy there! At the end of the day, it’s about whether or not *you* could live there.
Thanks everyone. I was planning on taking the offer anyway. But it’s nice to know that I won’t be moving into a dumpster fire when I get there lol

I love living in California. I surf most days before work and have a healthy glow all year long. Also Eaze delivers lol
Best response lol
I always laugh when my friend in Palo Alto tells me about this homeless guy who broke into his garage and began sleeping there. He would call the police who would come pick him up, but for whatever reason the police can’t hold him so they just let him walk. The homeless guy just keeps coming back when he’s cracked out and breaks into his garage to sleep.
This has supposedly happened about half a dozen times or so now. Seems ridiculous that the law enforcement doesn’t do anything, despite obvious trespassing.
I don’t know much about California, and it’s sure a beautiful place to visit, but I think it’ll stay just that for me, a vacation spot.

tbh most people from rich countries think the same thing but about our entire country.

I’ve lived so many places in the US and most folks parroting the crap you’ve been fed would love to live in SD if they could afford it. Yes cost of living and taxes are obnoxious but if you’re making a wage that lets you live there, then 100% go for it.
I live in LA and spend tons of time in Orange County and SD. I’m from the rural Midwest where they believe Californians are communists ( thanks FOX news). They constantly talk shit about CA; meanwhile, they’ve never been here; meth addiction runs rampant in their back yards, and pregnancy at 16 isn’t uncommon. They work at Walmart and Burger King. So I’m not taking life advice from the retards I grew up around. They’re uneducated fools and I pity them for that.
I love the beach life, surfing, beach volleyball, the rock climbing in the desert, the skiing at Mammoth, the back country camping, the hiking, the year round warm weather, the city life in LA when I want it, the beautiful golf courses, the deep sea fishing, etc etc. There’s literally no place in this country with everything to offer that CA has. It comes with a high cost - taxes, homeless, high cost of living, etc. But what else is money for, other than to live your best life? If you enjoy the things CA ha to offer, then fuck anyone who tells you to walk away because they bought into some bullshit political narrative.
I’m in living San Diego now. This place is *dope* — definitely the only place I’ll live in CA from now on. After living in SF for 2.5 years, I’d never go back to Bay Area or LA. For what it’s worth. Good luck.

Very cool VP2. I live very close to La Costa valley. Play tennis in Omni La Costa resort regularly.

If you are being paid well, ignore the haters and don’t look back. Life in SoCal is awesome.
Yes The homeless situation is bad, but they have started actively addressing it now. Expect it to be improve significantly by year-end/early next year. And while they exist in San Diego, it’s not as bad as in LA or SF.

Echo Park has been cleaned up. Venice Beach and Skid Row are next; Skid Row will take a while though.
