I got a competitive job offer in San Diego and some of the people I’ve spoken to keep telling me to not go to California because “that place is a dumpster fire”. I’ve read things online about taxes and cost being very high but it doesn’t seem any different than a large east coast city (except the Bay Area). It’s the most populous state so clearly that hasn’t deterred 40 million people. But I don’t understand why people keep telling me it’s a bad idea?

Perhaps their politics? Are these people of a particular political bent? Bashing California and NYC (and major metropolitan areas) has become the favorite pastime of a certain political ilk.

Also, it appears that being a Kardashian is sufficient to run for high political office. :-)

I grew up in LA. Left the state, came back for a few years while my wife went to law school at Stanford. Moved to a much lower-taxed environment now and my wife is considering job opportunities in California. I can't say I ever want to move back. There is too much group think. I worked at PayPal and some of the other tech firms. Unless you very closely identify with their politics and ideology, it is the most controlled speech environment I've ever seen. My dad went to UC Berkeley at the height of the free speech movement, now unless you espouse exactly what they want you to, they will do anything they can to remove your voice, some of the most intolerant people I've ever met in my life.

The homeless issues are like no other place I've seen and a direct result of the politics and policies at play here. You get what you reward. There are over 50k homeless people in LA county alone.

California was a paradise but the people in charge have ruined it over the last 40 years of my life. The regulations strangle businesses. At some point, if it isn't already happening, businesses will find friendlier places for them. When that happens, the jobs will go with them.

I loved the climate, hated the traffic, property costs were artificially high because of the onerous regulations, and if you are illegal, you likely have more rights and benefits than if you are legally here. Commit a crime and if you are illegal, they'll likely just let you walk. That is how I was attacked and required almost 100 stitches to sew my abdomen up from a knife attack by one of our friendly, wouldn't harm anyone, illegal/undocumented aliens. Can't bring back my cousin either who was killed by a similar drunk illegal/undocumented alien who had been released 3 times before.

If you have kids, schools generally suck. As for how good the environment is, ask them why they built one of the most expensive schools in the US (I think something like $400mil) on a hazardous waste dump. Google LA USD Belmont. Just more examples of governmental idiocy at work there.

The income taxes don't even begin to cover all the taxes and fees you get hit with. California is like living in the world's largest HOA. If you have any experience with homeowners associations, you'll know how bad this can be.

I loved California growing up. Politics are killing the goose that laid the golden egg. The state is the epitome of the road to hell is paved with good intentions. California prides itself on how forward-thinking it is, and wants to be a role model for how things should be everywhere. Why are so many people fleeing the state? Ask yourself why HP, Tesla, Oracle, CBRE, have bolted from the state. Think about the HP one. HP had its roots forever there. Yet the state and local governments don't seem to care. Heads are in the sand.

Sorry for a long sort of rant but I spent over 40 years in the state and watching its decline has been incredibly painful. Hopefully not too late to turn it around.

If you don’t take the offer, I will. San Diego is heaven on earth

like

I personally dislike California but you know what man? You will make whatever you want out of it. If you want it be amazing and beautiful you will. Be happy.

I’ve lived in all different states and countries and San Diego is a real gem. CA is expensive, including high taxes, but in terms of natural beauty, there are few places that compare with CA!

like

San Diego rocks buddy. For the past year I visited it every other weekend. Absolutely love it

like

Go and visit- you can get a real feel for california by just spending some time. I thought san diego was just too crowded- anywhere you want to be there is a battle for parking and access. Also noticeably more expensive then everywhere else in the US…

likefunny

I worked out in San Diego for a couple years. Though I don't regret doing it short-term, the cost of housing was ridiculous and it was extremely competitive. And I agree about the taxes. If you're not looking to settle down forever in San Diego, I'd say by all means ... try it out! It's a lovely place to live. But if you're trying to save money... mehhh

like

I’ve been vacationing in San Diego for 2 weeks now... live in Boston. I’m moving here the first chance I get. Incredible weather, incredible food, outdoor activities for a lifetime. Gorgeous ladies (and gents probably). Cheaper than a lot of major cities 😅

San Diego is the BEST!!!

Look at net export of folks to give you an idea. More folks leaving then going in spite of fantastic weather. DUMPSTER FIRE.

like

EY13 idt anyone is trying to say that more people more from Austin to SF or that it’s even close, but the above point about taxes in these smaller cities needing to go up to support infrastructure will happen. I see people in boise bitching about it all the time. Some very conservative friends I have up there want “the businesses to pay for it” but don’t want to call it a tax 😉😉😉 or they want “newcomers” to pay for it with a property tax… either way, they want more taxes cuz they know the infra isn’t hangin but are too brainwashed to suggest it’s a tax.

It's all about perspective. What are they comparing it to, and what is important to you? SDC is a beautiful place

like

I like San Diego. However, I would check out the job market for your skill set / industry. From my perspective LA, SF, OC have better job options.

like

I am not a fan of California at all, but San Diego is one of my favorite cities in the US and I would happily move there. Take the offer!

like

People find reasons to hate California so they don’t feel bad about not living there and feeling left out haha. I love California and have 0 regrets moving here!

like

San Diego is beautiful and great, and where I would want to live if I wasn’t unbelievably terrified of even the smallest of earthquakes. I don’t care about hurricanes, tornadoes, or anything else (they’re still scary to me), but earthquakes are my phobia

like

The first day I moved to SD there was an earthquake. It was terrifying! And only a small one. They keep saying the big one “is coming” but have been saying that for years.

Go with your gut. Do what you want. Otherwise, suffer the regret. Life is meant to live!

like

I lived in San Diego on a 90K salary and was barely making it. Make sure you’re making enough money - otherwise it’s beautiful. I also experienced a lot of cool people, and shallow people, but it really is it’s own kind of place- I think it’s a good idea to visit and really look for the cons (it will be hard) before you make a decision. I didn’t do that before I moved, and I moved back East 4 months later.

like

Love California!

like

Moved to LA last year (grew up in Sacramento, spent about a decade in the midwest) and I absolutely love it. Would probably love SD even more since it's cheaper.

like

Lived in SD many years. You might not spend 2 hours trying to get everywhere, but depending on where you live can easily spend 1 hour going anywhere.

Where would you be moving from? San Diego is generally much more affordable than prime LA and Bay Area neighborhoods. However, taxes and cost of living are still higher than many cities in the Midwest and South. San Diego is relatively conservative politically. Its year-round perfect weather near the beach is hard to beat. I’ve thought about relocating there and would recommend visiting to check it out!

I have not filed 2017, 2018, 2019 return as my total income was less than threshold

Is it possible to file return for 2017 , 2018, 2019( all r in refund) now without paying any penalty?

My hope is to buy and rent out a apartment while also owning a house and house hacking that by renting part of it out. Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Got news that my house closing may have to be moved due to a delay in the sale of my home. However our mortgage company’s underwriting team has been painfully slow in confirming if her income qualifies. She’s been at her new job 1 month after a year off.
