Ive been there. I wouldnt call it dumb. I'd call it naive. Learn what you can and make sure you document your progress through the year to earn a raise!
You’re not dumb. I’m still learning the art of negotiation and where my vs employer’s boundaries are. But overall, if you’ve ever had a bad boss, you above all should know that there’s plenty of overpaid and under qualified people in this industry so there’s no such thing as “not deserving” it
Thanks!! You’re right I for sure know people getting paid more than they deserve 🙄
It doesn’t hurt to counter
As much as $5k isn’t much to you, it also isn’t much to the employer.
Congrats to you! My advice for the future is to never make a move for less salary than you are currently making. Companies actually expect you to counter so don’t feel scared to do so. Focus now on your new role and now you’ll be better prepared for next time.

Congrats on the new job, but echoing what others have said, treat this as a lesson. My best advice is to always counter and push for a bit more. At the end of the day, they’re a company - not your friends or family (despite what they might say).
Also worth remembering that at a (big) agency it’s *not* the hiring manager or talent team’s money, either. An extra $5k a year is a drop in the bucket to them but meant the world to me when I was starting off my career!
You’re fine. It’s a learning opportunity. Also this job market makes it hard to negotiate.
In the employee market, I found it easier to negotiate a higher salary and days. In this current employer market, not so much. I just lost $6k and extra PTO in leaving my former employer and the new company was not willing to negotiate on anything I asked for.
In the end, I'm leaving a toxic environment and job that I was told verbatim has no promotional growth. My new role has lots of growth, so I just plan on getting back what I lost by doing my best and earning it. Worth it to leave what I was dealing with behind! In the end, it's a matter of what matters most to you. That money will come back fast enough with any promotion, raise, or merit increase. If the skills you're learning are transferable and the agency contacts add to your network and it looks good on your resume, you're acing it! :)
Just negotiate and ask for more in your next role. When you're earning below $100k, it's about learning, mastering, and growing.
I’ve been there. Always fight for more whether or not you think you deserve it. Sometimes extra money is just for the inconvenience of the job itself like working OT or the weekend.
I think that pay is a good salary! As you create your graphics, you may end up with a raise !
