I had 5 hours of research yesterday and it was unnecessarily stressful bc I could not focus for the life of me! I know I need to (and want to!) read the entire case, dissent, concurrence, etc. but I lose interest and end up rereading several times. Has anyone figured this out yet?

Did you actually have to read the entire docket?

If not, you’re letting your ADHD take over your ability to work effectively and timely.

For me, I write down what I need to find before getting into the weeds. When I find it, I force myself to a hard stop. It helps me save myself from going down endless rabbit hole of headnotes/keys, footnotes, dissent, shepard results etc.

Also, I found that printing and reading the physical copy helps me not get distracted by the embedded hyperlinks.

It can take a while at the beginning of a project to read the cases because the concepts and terminology may be new. But the reading rate will speed up as you become more familiar with the lay of the land research-wise.

like

Sidebar: it is necessary to read the entire case, dissents and concurrences, as well as check out any red signals in shepard results. But I totally agree that it’s important not to go down a rabbit’s hole when researching. Printing out the case and reading it in hard copy helps me focus, too.

Printing the cases for reading and like LC1 said writing down the issues so they’re right next to me while researching are good ideas. I’ll try these next time!

Best study guide for CFP?

CFP study programs:

I'm a little confused on Danko - does he offer a self-study option for the coursework requirement? On his website it looks like each module has a 4-day virtual class which I wouldn't be able to attend due to working full time. Does this program also include self-study material, and the classes are just supplementary/optional? I was also looking at Dalton for self-study and Danko for test prep. Thoughts?

Is anyone else returning to fully in person learning? We have been hybrid/synchronous since September, which has been very hard and not very effective. They want us to have all Kindergarten students come back in March. I want to stop live teaching over google meet all day while also teaching my students in person at the same time, but there is not enough space in my classroom for safe distancing, not enough space for movement, and sitting at a desk all day is not appropriate for K kids!

I’m one of the only attorneys in my Texas firm that had electricity, internet, and water this week. I was warm and comfortable but still could not get any work done because things going on in the outside world are distracting. When I try to work, I feel like I can barely hold a thought in my mind before I get the “wait, what am I doing again?” feeling. I saw a new PCP in a new city and finally talked about how I believe I may have ADHD (I’m 40), particularly based on things I’ve read here. He suggested I talk to a psychologist first, but I’m having the hardest time getting an appt with anyone in the area. Has anyone used Teladoc and have any recs? Alternatively, does anyone have recs of anyone I can to talk to so I can be tested?

After 4 years I want to leave law because of my adhd! I have been to 4 different firms and at each place I feel like I have been “found out”. At every place at least one attorney catches me about my attention to detail. I am so down on myself now. I can’t bring myself to care about small details that I know don’t actually matter. Sitting at a desk all day in word documents is the ultimate form of torture to me. My strengths are talking to people. I am super outgoing. Looking for a new career

What are your strategies for completing work efficiently? How do you figure out how long projects should take? A consistent piece of feedback on my yearly reviews has been that I over-bill & spend too much time on assignments. It’s something I actively work on, but I still have no concrete sense of how long I should spend on basic tasks (e.g., drafting a motion to dismiss). My firm is right to expect that I manage my time better as a mid-level associate. WFH has made my time management worse.

One of my frustrations with myself (writing it out here so I can work on it) is that I will print out something that I need, such as a traffic collision report. I will read it without actually reading it. This results in spending time without actually retaining info. Does this happen to anyone else? I’ve found that I can actually focus when I truly force myself, but often this happens after I’ve discovered an error or an important piece of information that I should have noticed earlier.

Should I just quit the legal field?

I have been a paralegal or legal assistant since 2010. I have worked for small and large firms and a TPA. I've worked in L&E, PI, and ID. Billing hours gave me nightmares. Right now I'm in a hybrid paralegal/LA position where I'm responsible for all of the docketing and supporting the managing partner and 1 associate and their 90+ ID caseload. I make a lot of mistakes everywhere I work. I feel so incompetent. Should I just abandon this career path?
