This reminds me of Pirates of the Caribbean. I forget the exact line, but it's a response to a similar question that goes something like "Currency is the new currency of the empire." It was true in the movie, and I think it's true here too. Adaptability and resilience and all that are great, but money is still #1. Companies want employees who will work for the least amount, employees want companies that'll pay the most. Nothing much else matters.

I see the logic in that. Pay still drives most decisions on both sides of the table. At the same time, I notice companies increasingly screening for people who can adapt quickly because tools and processes are changing faster than before.
It's incredibly important. I have been in the industry for almost 30 years and I have never seen things change as fast as I have been over the past two years.

I have heard similar reflections from people with long careers. The pace of change in technology and ways of working feels much faster now, which probably explains why adaptability is becoming such a central hiring theme.
