I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Generally low values people. Annoyingly insecure. Incremental mindset. Lack of ambition for clients. Too Disingenuous. Over index on Kool Aid drinking. Just don’t like the machine. And I’m a Partner!
You have to be terribly insecure to be a high achiever and desperate for the badge of mck. They want that personality because they will do anything to work and get ahead
Have done studies across maybe 8 international offices. Cultural differences and team norms are vast. Best advice I've found is 'find your tribe'. I was on the verge of leaving back to industry, but am in a better place now than I was 6 months ago. Agree there are colleagues who will do anything for personal gain, but I don't think this is particular to our firm.
What is the McKinsey culture? I hear the differences are M-vanity, BCG-academic, and B-frat. If you have your textbook chops about you then you might fit in better at BCG.
M4 - why do you ask?
Yes we need more information. But if it’s anything about the actual nature of the work probably not
Doubt it any different from BCG and Bain. The firms are large and accept a certain "type" but everyone is different
I love BCG— have been here ~5 years and met many, many incredible people. We do overindex on creating intellectual property and building a “knowledge platform”, and index somewhat less heavily to relationships (although obviously still key.) We are hiring a ton, so definitely worth asking the question. What office / offices?
PS I also know a recent McKinsey transplant partner if helpful to have a name to reach out to
That is refreshing. I saw a post from PwC on LinkedIn today that said “Technology unlocks possibilities, but it’s our people who are at the heart of our business.” I thought....no. If you’re on a technology project they aren’t hiring you for your bedside manner. You deliver and get out of there like a utility function. Could you imagine if we said that quote about doctors? I would go see the biggest jerk if he would cure my health. Intellectual property and knowledge are where things are at. Everything else is just buzzwords and schmoozing. It is fake, and has no real ability to drive clients forward unless the service is a soft skill service.
I’d choose knowledge and substance over personality in the workplace any day. At home is a different game...
I doubt it’d be meaningfully different here but agree you need to pinpoint what you dislike. There’s an element of luck though - you might find a team here you click better with but probably wouldn’t be worth the switching cost
It's also difficult to know the difference in culture without more details. From what I've seen at McKinsey the culture can be very different between offices and client teams. I'd recommend reaching out to anyone you know at the BCG office you'd be interested in joining and asking them about the culture there, since YMMV in here.
