But if my flight is delayed or cancelled I’m calling Chase trip protection anyway right?
Rising Star
You wouldn’t be calling trip protection, you’d be filing a claim online to get reimbursed. You’d be calling to get a new flight which could be slower vs having someone at an airport help you (or the family) around the holidays when weather can be chaos.
I typically say straight with carrier, and with potential for weather chaos around holidays I’d definitely advocate for that in this instance
Portal is better for the points, but only if nothing goes wrong. Like everyone mentioned, getting things fixed will be a massive headache. But I've done it before for smaller trips and have never had issues. For a big Christmas trip that includes family, I'd go direct with the airline.
Consider transferring CSR points to the airline and then free trip for one leg so as to leverage your Chase points. I’m about to do that with a United trip.
