I have an offer at Amazon for an L5 role (finance, non-tech). I have 2 YOE. Offer is: 85K base, SO y1-18K y2-14K, and 14 RSUs. Pretty happy with the offer but was always taught to give a counter offer. Is it worth countering or should I just take the offer as is?

Never take the offer as is. Say you have to account for opportunity cost of your performance bonus and whatnot and need more RSUs to make up for it. If they don’t budge on the RSUs ask them to increase the signing. Say you’re getting promoted as well.

My rule of thumb is, take the maximum performance bonus possible +50%. That’s my opportunity cost. They’ll counter something below that and you’ll end up with your entire would-be performance bonus in a good year as your signing, or more

likesmart

Well they don’t know that! Your group in particular could be doing well and you could be getting a fat bonus. The recruiter also doesn’t know when it gets paid out so use the information asymmetry to your advantage and say you’re leaving before it’s getting paid out

like

You can usually wiggle the signing bonus and if you have actual leverage, the RSUs.

However, be aware your actual manager is composing the comp package, so flimsy excuses follow you once you join.

like

Got it. That makes sense. The offer came in a little higher than the recruiter originally told me so I don’t really feel like I have much leverage

Current TC?

like

82K, perf bonus not yet determined but will likely be low

Honestly, I wouldn't negotiate unless they're requesting you to move. I'm in the minority here but seems like a good faith move to your hiring manager given COVID.

like

Appreciate your input, this was where I was leaning. It’s still a generous offer and 25% increase over my current salary. I am trying to delay the start date to give sufficient time to transfer projects so if anything I think I will use that as leverage - for me to start sooner I’d ask for a bit more sign on bonus

Amazon base is that low? You better get used to taking the metro to HQ2 my guy cause I doubt those stocks are getting sold anytime soon

like

Yes it’s low because it’s capped out at 160K for the whole company and I’m in a non-tech role. First year TC (103K) is considered base + sign on bonus because of the slow RSU vesting schedule. Also at 23 I’m just happy to be making over 75K. Plenty of time for me to start building up my compensation

likefunny

SA1 hit it on the head, doesn’t hurt to ask for more.

like

My simple rule is - “if you don’t ask, you don’t get”

There’s nothing wrong is asking. It shows you are ambitious.

They’ve already identified you as the right person for the role and have made you the offer - so you know they want you.

Higher offers at 27-28 with more fixed pay is from contract and hire/fire type companies. Mostly indirect hiring instead of direct employment with the final employer, means higher pay with lower jon security - we get little more pay, companies get the option to let go with ease later!

For anyone who receives a quarterly bonus or raise in some form, does your employer start to schedule you for less hours when your raise kicks in, or pull you from a future schedule entirely once you receive a bonus; only to put you back on once the hours you would have worked and earned the amount given are passed? Ie; a part time employee getting $200.00 in a quarterly bonus and then not being scheduled a whole week during a bi-weekly pay period where they would have earned more on the clock…?

Clawback clause in current contract: been in role for over 2 yrs, it was an internal move that required relocation. Relocation was approved shortly after (over 2 yrs ago) but covid meant the actual move and start of my contract with new subsidiary was delayed, I was paid by the previous subsidiary meanwhile. I got small relocation package. Would internal move be subject to a buy-out/clawback clause if I leave now and if yes, is it time in role or time under new contract? Any experience? Thanks!
