No, not stupid. It’s the right thing to do. You tell your boss everything you wrote here, and see how they feel about keeping and matching you.
Thank you! This is so helpful and much appreciated
If you're relatively new in the industry or midlevel, the most important thing is the opportunity to create work for your book. The money and titles will come easily later if you have a solid body of work. Its tempting to jump for money, but if you're not sure the next agency will help you grow, you may struggle getting to the next level later on. Just something to think about since you mention that it may be a lesser opportunity. I've gotten a counter before and stayed, but I think if you bring this up to your boss, you may want to be prepared to leave. Good luck!
Take the opportunity
Even if it’s for smaller clients and probably less creative opportunity? I’m just worried about losing momentum and I’m hungry to make stuff. That, and the fact that I don’t quite feel ready to leave my current spot are the two things holding me back
Is there an opportunity to let your leader know that you have received an offer and see if your company would match the offer? It depends on your relationship and performance, but may be worth a conversation.
I was in a similar position as you a few years ago. I liked my agency, I liked the team I worked with and truly enjoyed working with my boss. I ended up telling my boss, but the agency couldn’t match the offer and it kind of resolved itself in a way. I’d say: talk to your supervisor, tell them what you wrote here and then make a decision from there!
Money and titles will come, don’t leave for a small increase in either of them if it means losing people you like to work with and/or less portfolio opportunities. If you do bring it up to your boss, you should be prepared to leave if they don’t match. Otherwise, I’d stick it out a little longer for an offer truly worth leaving for. Hope that helps!
