Loyalty doesn’t pay like it used to. I would say there is something to liking your team. Having decent coworkers is worth a lot. However, there is a time when the gap doesn’t make sense.
Loyalty used to mean something like when you stick around, grind it out, get the promotions, the raises, the security.
Now? It often feels like you're just leaving money on the table.
Strategy. Failing to do it is leaving money on the table. Internal raises just do not pay as much as you can get on the open market, with the massive caveat that finding a better offer is much easier said than done right now.
Strategy is everything these days, and ignoring the market value game is basically voluntary money left on the table. Internal raises? They're still mostly in that 3-5% range which doesnt amount to much and doesnt keep up with inflation
