I live in San Diego - moved here for work a few years ago. This is one of the most beautiful places I’ve seen, but expensive indeed. It’s very peaceful and health conscious (which I love). My apologies I do not have any hotel recommendations bc I’m new here, but if you need a nice vacation this is the spot. There are a lot of beaches, so if you don’t find the perfect hotel, you can always go to the beach.
I moved here from NYC for the pandemic and I agree with D1s comments above.
Hotels - I’d suggest checking out
- Coronado Hilton - expensive but newly renovated w/ historic charm
- Marriott marquis marina - not beachside but marina
- Hyatt mission bay
- Hyatt Alila
- La Jolla shores hotel
Try Oceanside (45min north of SD), cool and hip with a few beachfront newish hotels, like mission pacific
Do you have any Hilton points that you could use for the Coronado? We stayed recently on points from Hilton combined with points transferred from Amex and it was more reasonable. Also, Hilton recently had a bonus for purchasing points and it would have been half the cost to purchase Hilton points for our stay vs paying the nightly rate. I would definitely look into the points purchasing option.
I live here in SD also, I have not stayed in any of the hotels but my best friend has come in for retreats and she has stayed at the here at The Lodge at Torrey Pines which is right across from my office and near the beach. She said it's quite lovely.. we have HHs at the Lodge often.

I guess I just have to accept that San Diego is a really expensive place as all these other suggested hotels are like $600+++ a night 🤣
I used the deliotte rate for la Jolla and it was $200. I used our rare for gaslamp and it was $200 too
I’ve heard good things from friends who have stayed at The Pearl Hotel. It’s a vintage style boutique hotel in Point Loma.
la jolla is the only answer
Just skimmed this but the Intercontinental Hotel is great
