I have two offers in hand post-MBA:
1. EY-Parthenon OTS (M&A integration/strategy) as a MBA Consultant 170K base+bonus. My plan is to work there for 2 years and exit back into the Tech industry.
2. I have an offer from Amazon for a Product Management role with 30% higher pay

I am trying to understand which of the two sets me up for success in the tech industry. Long run I want to be able to do all kinds of roles from Strategic Planing, Strategic Partnerships, Product Management and such.

Thanks a lot!!!!

At this point in your career, don’t make life decisions over $50k. Your lifestyle does not materially change at $170k vs $220k. Interest in what you will be doing, work-life balance, quality of your direct manager, impact to your longer term career goals, etc. matter much more.

likehelpfulsmart

MD1, your words are music to my years!! if you seriously practice what you’re preaching, I’d love to work for you!!!!

As someone in EYP TSE, I'd say go with Amazon. If you already know you want to be in tech, you'll save yourself a lot of time potentially working on projects that aren't aligned with your end goal. While I have a lot of friends that work at Amazon and their experiences are hit or miss, it's the right place for you to go between these options.

likehelpful

Amazon by far. Good luck!

like

Thanks a lot. Could you please let me know what exits are there post Product within tech? Can I move laterally and vertically as I build my career?

I was an intern in OTS and I absolutely hated the work. My boyfriend also works at Amazon (software) and he complains about the culture. It is really team dependent at Amazon but your role seems very lucrative. One thing to note is you’d only get 5-10% of stock options if you leave after 2 years

like

I was an undergrad intern haha! I hated the work because I had no client exposure or any work stream ownership. It was more project planning than actual analysis. My overall experience just didn’t provide me satisfaction and fell below of what I expected consulting would be.

like

Again, AMZN is the way to go here for what you want to do. You’ll learn a lot and will be able to continue in product anywhere with that on your resume.

EYP is completely different: you’d likely work within M&A and your exit opps would be to Corp dev and strategy, not quite product.

I was in your exact same shoes 5 years ago and I regret not going to amazon every day. Amazon PM is very competitive now and it will sey you up nicely. Please take amazon and don’t look back.

Amazon PM became very competitive in 2017 and earlier it was much easier to transition from consulting to tech PM. Now they don’t look at consultants twice no matter the brand. Do not, I repeat, do not get lured into consulting or that lifestyle. The days of having 2 years of consulting are long gone. If you don’t enter directly after school. You’ll have a much much harder time. Believe me. Happy to talk via DM.

like

First, congrats! 30% higher pay is not an insignificant amount. Also, it’s already in the industry you want to exit to so seems like Amazon is the way to go

like

I’m just baffled that you got into Amazon as a PM and you don’t even seem to understand what product management is. But Product Management is one of the (if not the) most respected career path in tech. In tech, everything is all about the product. Usually consultants have a hard time moving into PM and have to come in through BizOps, which pays less and is less respected in Tech.

like

Thanks for the response. I used to do product at (not fancy tech company think tier 2) and then moved into a product strategy team for a small tech firm - not a fancy name. So I have direct experience in PM. My biggest fear is that I'll end up getting stuck as a PM for life if I go back to PM. But that consulting would open up more career opportunities.
But it seems like Amazon PM doesn't shut the door on me for going back to strategy type roles based on everything I'm hearing on this thread?

How do you have a title of Principle??

like

Ah got it

Amazon, definitely.

Amazon. Your growth trajectory may seem slow at first but your experience as PM at Amazon will open so many doors to much more interesting and lucrative opportunities. Unless your life dream has been to become a consulting partner, go to Amazon and don’t look back

Rest of FAANG or up and coming start-ups - you name it. These opportunities are available to consultants too but role types would be limited and you often get down leveled. Generally, tech doesn’t seem to value consultants as much as other industries

Just moved into an apartment in Old Town. The insulation for both sound and heat is terrible. I can hear everything going on outside and am nervous that the heat/gas bill will be insane.
