I heard “we don’t have budget for that” followed five minutes later by “let’s bring someone in.” At what point do you stop believing the budget excuse?

Different buckets of money.

Funding is always fungible. The big challenge is simply being allowed to speak to appropriate leadership level that can authorize the spend.

This is true. Depending on the size of the company, the right person can be many layers above, and completely inaccessible.

If it is a priority, they will “find” the money.

The Followup question should be, “how do we build a case for “that” so that we can plan to have the budget for that in 2027 or 2028?

Data is almost always needed.

like

And if it’s not a priority ATM, it’s a question of timing. Maybe 2026 isn’t full, and only proposals related to the top X programs will be considered for funding.

There's always room for consultants.

So overheard after work:

I left a company a while back and a coworker of mine that also left just informed me that one of the C level execs has an SEC decision against him for embezzling several million.

This was from before I worked there...

I made a couple errors at a new job. An important document to be distributed had wrong information on it, which was proofread by 2 other people. Then a couple of typos in emails, the person micromanaging me told me to send out but I didn’t fix the errors. Failed to meet a deadline but completed 95%. I was written up over all this last week, fired this week. There’s a lot more to this but I think it’s because the DM doesn’t like me.

So, some of my co-workers simply said that they want to go ahead and start something or start looking elsewhere (career change) because they don't know how much it will last at the pace we are going in regards to case intake and pay out. Should I start panicking or simply start looking elsewhere? They even they even told me if I was looking elsewhere or planned on doing so also. I found it weird in a way.

On a Zoom call:
Colleague A: *begins talking*
Colleague B: *begins talking at the the same time as A*
Colleague B: "I'm sorry, A. Go ahead"
Colleague B: (said with much attitude) "No, B. You go ahead. I'm sure what you have to say is more important anyhow."
Everyone else on the call: *Stunned silence....*
