I just found out my coworker is essentially being demoted “due to business need.” She is a supervisor of a team and she will soon be on the same team and doing the same work as her team and reporting alongside them to someone else. Have you ever heard of this?

I've heard of things like that happening. The sad reality of modern business is that someone several levels above us can look at a spreadsheet and just decide to rearrange our occupations and lives. Employers talk about how we're a family and all that, but when you get down to it, we are just cells on someone's spreadsheet.

Kindly let me know about the salary and job description?

like

Yes it happened to me. I was a salaried director reporting to the CEO. We got sold and I was demoted to a hourly coordinator position doing the same job! When I was told the CEO had zero concern about it and was like too bad. 26 years with company and I quit.

like

Wow I’m so sorry to hear that happened to you! Glad to hear that you moved on and knew your value.

like

Yes, several times. It seems like the idea of how a business should run keeps changing "we need more leadership" vs "we need less distance/supervisors between the employee and the managers".

We hire supervisors and then a few years later they are back to this idea that having people between the employee and the manager of a unit is a bad idea. The issue is those supervisors get demoted and don't want to work bedside and then the manager can't handle the increased work load. So then hiring for supervisors occurs again.

It keeps happening and you would think someone would stop and say "we tried that before and it doesn't work"

like

Yeah it happened to someone I knew. It was a win-win situation for him though. The paycut was only a dollar and when the annual budget increase came which was a five percent raise he was making the same if not a little more than when he was a supervisor and had way less responsibilities.

like

That’s a side step way of getting someone to quit.

like

Yes, I’ve seen this happen during company restructures or downsizing. It’s tough for your coworker, similar to when departments merge and roles shift. While challenging, it can open new opportunities. Supporting your coworker during this transition is key as they adjust to their new role.

Most of the time people just don't stay when this happens

Yes during covid this happened to me, accept I was given the choice between signing a new contract with significant less money and more work. Or taking a separation, amicably.

like

I've heard of it happening and its really unfortunate. I think if it happened to me I would start looking for something else. I get the business has to do what is best for them but you have to do what is best for you too. I wouldn't want to take a demotion unless I got to keep my same pay haha.

like

Even with the same pay, it's tough to be work at the same level with people who reported to you before

like

Sure. By receiving less compensation for actual work performed. Many folks are doing their manager’s job for less compensation. This was just one instance where your company made that visible and should explain to staff that the transition is not due to her performance. Then ask what austerity measures they are taking?

like

Just hope she wasn’t a nasty manager!

like

No the opposite! She is wonderful and has a ton of great experience.

like

yes I had it happen to me this last march

like

And how you cope with it?

Yes, I have seen it happen. It makes it very uncomfortable for the rest of the team as well as that (soon to be former) supervisor. The best thing is to just be a friend. She will need that support for the transition. I have seen this happen as a way to force someone to quit (to avoid having to pay unemployment). It's a horrible leadership that decides to do this to their employees.

like

It’s a very humiliating situation.

Yes in my position, I had my back give out on me and had a DRs note for 2 weeks off. The owner of the company decided that upon my return I would have less hours weekly and a different position in the office. Mind you, my back gave out to the point I couldn't even drive myself to work, to doctor appointments or anywhere for that matter. My daughter was basically my uber driver. You can come in do your work, give 110% and they still don't give a damn about your health and well being let alone your safety. That's when I took up anotch and reported this to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

like

I have been through this two times, isn’t the goal to do what best for the company? As long as the pay is the same and you like working for that company you have to change title should be acceptable. The only reservation I would have been I was a terrible manager and treated people badly.

Yes! It happens frequently in education.

⚠️Toxicity Alert ⚠️

My previous manager would track us by hours daily, made a fuss everytime anything stretched and guilt us for that and the unplanned leave too unless it was COVID. Hinted him a lot of time, this is problematic but apparently he considered it "standard practice for agile".

Now 8/10 teammates have switched within < 1 year of project start (6-7 months with him) which tbh had good work in our opinion and even team was fun to work with even though none of us ever met in person.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

I'm a cashier. We just got a new manager, and she's making things really hard for us. She starts work at 4:30am and leaves around 2:30pm, but she still expects us to stay until 6pm and work on the weekends! She gives us really long shifts and doesn't give us much time for breaks. And when we ask her about it, she gets mad.

I'm worried that if I speak up, she'll make my life even harder. I don't want to lose my job because of this—do you guys have any advice?
