I just started a new SPM a week ago and feel like a disaster. It’s taken a week to get Jira access, I missed sitting in on a client feedback session because it was mentioned but no calendar invite, how do I turn this around so I can take charge? I feel disorganized and clueless

First off, take a breath! You’re a week in, at some larger companies it’s probably the norm to not have all your tools in place. My first two weeks at my current company included lots of onboarding sessions. I wouldn’t fret about the client feedback session, I’m sure there’s more.

If you don’t already have meet and greets scheduled, get those on the calendar w/ all various stakeholders. Ask those people what meetings you should be a part of as well as who else to meet up. Partner closely with your tech lead to ramp up on the ongoing projects. If you have downtime do competitive research, play around with your product, jot down any initial notes.

Thank you great advise!

See if there’s anyone on your team that can forward you any reoccurring meetings in advance. Also, it takes forever to get access to systems. For me, it took a full four weeks.

like

Agreed, and I'd have a sitdown with individual members to figure out what's on their plate and where you fit in. That way they can forward you invites and get you up to speed faster!

Give it a few weeks, don’t sweat it! I’ve been working at my company for 2 years and still don’t have all my access, no one can figure out how to get me Cognos access haha

That’s hilarious, and makes me feel better!

Things are usually a little bumpy at the beginning. Maybe you should schedule some individual time with your team members. It's always good to receive insights from someone who's been with the company and/or team for awhile.

Thank you, I did some syncs yesterday and have more this week.

I would sit down with your manager and have a candid conversation about where you are in the journey of starting the new gig and how you're adopting to the learning curve

That’s a great idea too

I’m at an agency where I love the people, the culture, and there is good work happening… but my main client is driving me insane. They’ve sent us swirling for about a year now and are creatively paralyzed - not able to make decisions and make something. Likely no new business opportunities until the new year. Should I stay or go?

Hello, I'm hearing product management is the space to be if you want to see a considerable bump in pay. What is the path forward to reach that role? I have experience as a project manager, scrum master, and BA and I was hoping these combined could land me a product manager role, but it seems like companies require extensive prior experience as a product manager already - so, what is the best way to get my foot into that role?

So embarrassed. I literally had one job to do today which was to schedule a client and give and take her paperwork when she came in. Totally called her by the wrong name today AND gave her the wrong paperwork. She was really nice about it but I feel like my boss was disappointed and I'm disappointed in myself. I don't want her to think I won't be able to keep clients straight when I start doing supervised sessions.
