Yeah from what I’ve seen it will top out around senior associate comp. From there, you’ll need to be GC-level or get lucky at a private company with options to make the big bucks.

Moving up in house is like getting promoted in the upper echelons of the military. Need both the track record and someone to retire…
I made $620k last year; just hired a junior counsel (c/o 2022) and paying her around $350k.
I work in the private funds space and this is fairly typical comp (for NYC/Norcal). The sector matters a lot.
Are you hiring any more juniors 👀 asking for a friend
The sector matters a lot. Your base salary isn’t really where you’re making your money. It’s in your equity stack. Once you hit that 3rd year where you’re fully vested you’ve basically doubled your TC. So easily going from roughly $250/300-500/600k in just a few years.
If you consider yourself a high performer you could probably go from counsel to Sr/Lead to AGC in a fintech in a relatively short time and that would impact your comp significantly as well.
There’s always the opportunity to become the GC or sole attorney of a startup and get in on an early series company where base comp is decent but could skyrocket post IPO—a lot of potential.
At my non pharma non tech F100 non pharma ICs top out around $500-$600k all in with much of that bonus and stock. If you’re managing a larger team and the GCs direct report then probably $1.2m.

I assume im topping out at around 500k TC. I am fine staying as an IC for foreseeable future. I dont like working more.
