Pro
-Join r/wine
-Take a WSET course
-Watch wine movies - I love Bottle Shock
-Try popular grapes from different regions, look up the tasting/smell on Vivino and try and pick up the same yourself (every grape/region has their unique profile - I love Sicilian Nero D’Avila grapes because when you first pop the cork you immediately get salt water smell)
- Research different things that impact flavor (old vines vs young vines, new world vs old world)
Pro
Or as they would imply - your palate has evolved.
Listen to the "ill drink to that podcast"
. Hundreds of episodes interviewing wine makers and sommeliers, each with their own passion and specialty.
Where to listen?
Windows on the World by Kevin Zraly. He has a really interesting background and was cellar master of windows on Sept. 11, 2001 (if memory serves, they held a tasting the night before but he was not in the building at the time of the attack).
Karen McNeil’s wine bible is great but dense.
Jancis Robinson’s world atlas of wine.
My novice friends love the wine folly book
Wine Folly is a great book!
Go to Terroir (the wine bar in Meatpacking) and talk to the bartenders
Dark Horse in Williamsburg also a good option
Also Sohm in midtown is good but a bit pretentious
Course wise the WSET program is pretty good
For a book try Wine Folly or The Wine Bible
As mentioned above WSET level 1 is a great foundation course in wine
Piedmont in Italy!
