Counter. Say that you have had a chance to do more research and reiterate your experience that is worth x more. If you want $5k, ask for $7 or 8k to allow for negotiation.
I quite like this response - I think it's fair to counter to some extent and they will expect it to a degree. The recruiter is just as motivated as you are so might as well push for it
Thank you to all for your input! I did respectively counter, but was denied with reasoning that their budget is topped out at the originally offered 80k + 5-9% bonus. I accepted due to the many other perks that come with this job change. I’m sure it’s always worth asking; it just didn’t benefit me this time around. Just hoping it doesn’t cause any odd tension or impression with my new direct supervisor and upper manager.
On average, significant increases come with job changes. So, not speaking up leaves money on the table. I’m really glad that you countered! You should be proud of yourself as well. Just promise yourself that you won’t downplay your qualifications going forward. You’re worth the salary increase.
At this point, you can't go back on time. I will still counter and tell them that since it is in your range, you have done more research and would want to get $5K more.
Reach out to the recruiter and explain there was a misunderstanding. Reiterate your qualifications. They already think you are the one, but you need to gingerly feel your way so they don’t start regretting their decision. No company in their right mind is going to select a candidate and then lose them over a couple thousand dollars. An alternative is to negotiate for other benefits - home office stipend, internet, cell phone, additional paid time off, guarantee to evaluate performance in 6 months and get a pay bump or additional bonus, etc.
Hi! I think you can still counter. What was your minimum preference btw?
I basically said 80k guaranteed salary. They offered exactly 80k and 5-9% bonus dependent on performance/hitting those targets.
Should’ve definitely named $85-90k to hopefully settle on $85k since I’m walking away from sales that would give me a higher ceiling. But my hesitance comes from the fact that their offer is not totally outside my range with the presumed bonus. I just also don’t want to leave money on the table toward my goal when they called with an offer almost instantly after last interview.
Recruiters are always going to sub you at your lowest rate because companies want to bill the most qualified person for the cheapest possible situation. They don't want to give the agency tons of money.
I’m sorry I didn’t specify - she does have the title of recruiter but technically she is an internal recruiter / talent acquisition associate for the company. Just in case that changes any recommendations!
Yup. Definitely worth the shot. But if they insist on the salary range you provided, it's totally up to you if you accept. You could still try your luck at a different company.
Are you applying directly through the company and having an agency submit you? You'd probably get better benefits being on the company's payroll; I'd probably cut ties with the recruiter altogether in that case.
I applied directly with the company - this is their internal recruiter (seemingly more an internal talent acquisition role to me)
In this economy? You're gonna have to counter that real good. I'm sure they've still got room to give you more than your minimum. Give us an update when you can!
This happened to me before. But still, I countered. I just reasoned out that the higher amount was really my target salary and I just made an honest mistake.
Try this - Now that you have a better understanding of the position expectations, you feel that xx is more in line with the position. Also, don’t forget to negotiate for other items such as additional time off, phone stipend, home office allowance, home internet allowance, etc.
