I’m interested in comp. I’m a C-suite at a PE backed company and deliberately chose this path as I want to be an operator and a CEO. However, my comp is low as my company is small. Amazing experience and title but I’ve scarified a pretty penny. Curious what comps to expect in a large fund in a PE ops role.
DS1: are you ex-MBB?
Thanks for doing this!
What are your thoughts on ops vs investment; if you had the chance to start it all over, would you start in IB and aim for the investing team?
I would personally not do the investment side. It has ~40-50% higher compensation but it's 100% life absorbing. It leaves very little space for anything else in your life outside of work. Also 95%+ of the work in investing is for deals that don't happen, which can be very frustrating.
Finally, success rate in investment is much lower than at PE Ops. And many PE Ops professionals go on to take C-Level or CEO roles and end up making a lot more money than PE Investors through Equity comp.
What’s the work/life balance as compared to consulting, as well as travel? More, less, same?
Similar but with more control and less fake stress. See more details in another response.
Is an MBA necessary for PE Ops? I’m a US MD from a top 20 medical school, top 20 undergrad. Decided not to pursue clinical medicine and just received a full-time offer for BCG. Will be entering at the post-MBA level so wanted to ask about the MBA.
Also, as I likely will be focused on healthcare-related projects. Will that be a hindrance that I want to be more area focused? Thank you so much!
@BCG2 Thank you very much for the summary! And that makes sense, would be happy to stay in healthcare related areas down the road also
What does comp look like at diff levels of seniority?
EM1 about 40-50% is cash (base + bonus) and the rest is carry
Does only MBB folks eventually go to PE? Can folks from industry or other background go to PE ?
Ok. Thank you
Are you able to work with cool consumer/tech companies? Or is it mainly less sexy PE portcos?
Coach
My portcos are not 'cool'. But they're great businesses.
How available do you think PE Ops is for people in Accenture Strategy with a T15 MBA? Im considering trying to leave consulting once I make Manager
Coach
Possible but in the lower middle market and perhaps the middle market. Very hard in the upper middle market or mega funds.
How is the hiring situation at your firm rn?
As difficult as for Deal teams?
Or less so, since Value Creation has become more important to actually realize DPI?
Too bad, but thank you 🙏
Is it worth it to go LMM PE over MBB, if you’ve never done MBB?
Prior experience is Accenture and EY, currently at a MM fund that’s tanking. My compensation was somewhat better but I wouldn’t call it worlds better.
Wondering if MBB might be the rout to better funds or if I should stay in PE and not be jaded by my current PE company’s experience.
Getting MBB is gonna be very tough to get right now unless you're coming out of school
How did you find the role? Which recruiters?
Coach
I networked my way in through MBB and MBA alumni
Is it possible to move from m&a / strategy at an acquisitive corporate to pe ops? With prior mbb experience
Let’s say the corporate is a very well known and respected one
