Social stories!! These can be helpful to help the child understand why eloping is not safe and what to do instead. I have a binder for my students with autism with all of their current social stories and we read through them every morning. This student may need some built in breaks throughout the day if they’re running to avoid the classroom. First, then charts with visuals are something I use a lot too - first we do our math work (picture of math), then we get a break (picture of whatever break the student will do).
When I have a runner they are always placed in seats really far from my door and I move around my room furniture so that a student has to zig zag to get to the door. I also always keep my door closed. Those extra seconds it takes to get across the room, navigate furniture, and open the door usually allow myself or a paraprofessional to stop the runner before he gets out into the school.
You may like to engage the student with art. Have him draw a picture of basic surroundings; a house a bridge, etc. Things you know he can associate with. Assign it, and eventually he may be able to reveal to you in art form what is troubling or leading him out of the room. He may also reveal if home life is an issue as opposed to school.
