Get something elsewhere before you get asked to go.
@Asso 3, sometimes you just don’t click - you could be a rock star and your boss may just not like you and be immature/emotional enough not to be able to get past that. (It’s a miserable situation)
I respect that. I’ve been in the same position - and to a degree am in it now. You’re right, don’t move just anywhere to get away from the situation ... you seem to be a very thoughtful person. Do you have mentors that you can speak with to help navigate this, either internally or externally, who have a deep enough network to know where you’d be good or what could be a good next step for you? Can anyone give you air cover within your department? Any longer term managers or infrastructure (like staffers) his level or above with whom you’ve worked that you think could guide you on next steps? What is your relationship with his boss? You’ve got to give yourself some breathing room because if no one else knows what’s going on, he can create any narrative about you and your work he wants, and once the ball is rolling it’s impossible to stop. Also, if there is only one slot for a promote, by consistently going above and beyond, you might be making his attempts to get his own person promoted harder - thereby causing him to act even worse toward you. (Not that I’m condoning his behavior or telling you to stop being an exceptional employee, just trying to make sense of his behavior.) This whole situation stinks because I’ll bet that your HR is non-existent or is too spineless to actually do anything to help you out or be a real resource. Have you indicated to him that you’d like move off the team? It’s almost counterintuitive, but losing his best employee might just be exactly what he wants - he potentially could be helpful to find you a new spot. But if he hasn’t been there long enough he might not have a network or knowledge of opportunities. I would only think about that as a second to last resort (jumping to a new role just to jump would be last resort). I don’t know - I’m so very sorry I can’t give you better advice.
I’ve been going above and beyond to get promoted, but he brought his own person from his old team that he wants to get promoted. He has been intentionally ignoring me and preventing me from getting exposure. It’s really weird situation. I have been in this team longer but he just joined a yr ago
The thing to understand about banks is they only care about bottom line and if your boss is raking it in, going above him or to HR won’t help you because he is more useful to the firm than you and there are plenty of instances senior bankers get away with treating juniors like crap because they make money for the firm. Your best course of action is to switch to a different team, or go to a different firm
Why does manager hate you if you have good performance?
GS1: I am trying really hard to find a role that would be a good fit. I just don’t want to move anywhere and ruin my career just because my manager is trying to have me leave...
If they ask me to find a different role, would this adversely affect my hr standing? I.e. would make it more difficult to find smth
In the same boat
