Seems to me that your administration is not following state guidelines for servicing ELLs during this crisis. How does your school expect you to communicate lessons to students?
You can use Language Line to call families. Your district has to have an account.
Are they expecting you to make home visits?
Our admin is SUPER strict about language line use. I expect they will want us to work through the interpreters we have on staff. I’m going to trial the messaging program ‘TalkingPoints’ to contact families too. I’m just worried about our families that don’t understand languages available on talking points, like Karen, Karenni, and Nuer.
I use Talking Points and it works well. The only draw back is that you are limited to 300 characters. I love the fact that I can text a whole class at a time without worrying about translating.
that's tough, especially if they're non readers. I'd encourage parents to read and play games with their children in their native language. Can they watch children's movies in English and draw a picture of what they saw?
I have plenty of activities for them to practice, just no way to communicate to them what they are supposed to do if I can’t have some sort of audio connection or translated written direction...
I’m conference calling a lot of our families with a district interpreter to do an initial check in, and then setting up a schedule for ‘English Only’ calls with the students each week. This way the interpreter isn’t stretched even thinner. It’s worked pretty well so far, a decent way to keep contact with our ‘non-connected/offline’ ELs.
I use Edmodo as an LMS because it’s mobile-friendly and there’s also an app students can download. It works a bit like Facebook so students can leave comments to a message or a link you share. teachitsimple.com/yeslms
