Xanax.
I turn on spa music, put on a weighted eye mask, and take magnesium daily. I used to have trouble falling asleep and have been surprised that I was able to fall asleep in the middle seat on four flights last month. They weren’t the best sleep, but something is better than nothing.
Is business class an option? Lie flat seats make all the difference, in my experience.
Try magnesium glycinate or buy a better ticket.
Dramamine + wine
Believe it or not, the chances of overdosing on benzodiazepines (Xanax and others) alone is extremely low — you CAN overdo it, which is technically an “overdose”, but I’m more focused on OD resulting in death here. It’s when you mix them with other chemicals like alcohol or opioids that the risk of overdose is heightened. Though it is an over-the-counter medicine, Dramamine is easier to overdose on by itself than Xanax is by itself. So similar to Xanax, you should avoid drinking alcohol when taking Dramamine to avoid unpleasant side effects.
Overnight flight and right to hotel after landing? Pop an edible before u take off. I haven’t done that on work trips but for personal travel overseas it’s my go-to.
Doesn’t have to be a lot, just a chill background high and I’ll fall right asleep.
If you are expected to fly in standard or economy seating, hard to fall asleep, as these sections can be packed, busy and annoyingly noisy. Even if you fly Business Class, the plane can be a difficult setting for restful sleep.
So, try relaxing as much as possible, Changing time zones/clocks might be part of your problem. Use the Stoics philosophy approach, change aspects that you have control over, adapt and have contingency plans to those aspects of your life over which you have little direct control. Frequent commercial airlines travel for business these days is much less pleasant than in former decades, for many reasons including itinerary changes, seating bumps, route cancelations, delays for weather or mechanical issues.
Research travel discussion websites (other than this one) that recommend high performance comfort and efficiency gear, including packable pillows and blankets, eye shades, hearing protection, etc.
Use: valerian, theanine, GABA, magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate, fast-dissolve lower dose melatonin (too much is not good) supplements regularly, to help you with stress, along with meditation breaks/walking and yoga.
