You’ll never regret spending more time with your family. I have a toddler and try to always put him first. I don’t ever want to look back and feel like I missed out on his childhood. And even if it feels like a bad career move in the moment, chances are it won’t have any impact on your career in the long run. People need to understand we’re human beings who can’t be at their beck and call 24 hours a day.
I turned down a role recently because I thought I was pregnant. It was for our new large account and everyone in the office was bummed I didn’t take it. I felt bad but my current role does not require travel. That role was going to be travel every week for a year. I had to say no without explaining why because everyone knows I’m super focused on my career and this would have been a skyrocket to the top if I stayed at this company long term - so needless to say there was confusion and scrambling on their part. It’s certainly a challenge and I know I hurt my career, there’s no ifs about it and you likely feel the same way, but I know there will be other opportunities - got to stay glass half full! If not we’ll make them!
I’ve had to do that as well. It sounds like you tried to make it work.
As a manager, if travel is part of the role, I only get frustrated with the team member if it happens repeatedly. You should be okay if it isn’t a pattern.
