I used to think counteroffers were always a bad idea. Then I saw someone accept one and actually get a role they wanted internally. Sometimes staying can be growth too. Would you ever accept a counter offer?

The key question is: why did you want to leave in the first place? If the counteroffer solves that — a new role, better manager, clearer growth — it might be worth considering. But if it’s just more money to stay in the same situation, it’s usually a temporary fix. I’ve seen people stay and thrive, and others regret not making the leap.

Exactly, the “why” matters most. A counteroffer that changes the role or growth path can be valuable, but just money rarely fixes the underlying issues.

I did TWICE. The company I worked for was great, but my salary was just too different compared to market. I think they saw the hunger in me and the potential, and when I got competing offers they matched both salary and also importantly opportunity wise. This was a big company, so they had many options. The first time they moved me to a different team, the next time to a different project, with more responsibility. I think this helped me a lot raising the bar and growing. I would have never done it if I didn't like the company I worked for and they didn't treat me well.

like

That’s a great example. When the company matched both opportunity and compensation, it became a real growth moment rather than just a retention move.

What kind of comp can you expect exiting into an corporate Strategy and Ops role after 3 years post-undergrad at a top tier consulting firm? I know it’ll vary across geography and company size, but it seems like around $180-200k for all-in comp (base/bonus/equity) is reasonable for a mid-size private company in CA. Or am I off my rocker?

I’ve been with my current company for a little over 5 years now and since the start of the pandemic have been WFH. I absolutely love WFH and have always wanted a position in which I could WFH. There is talk of bringing everyone back to the office full time and that’s not what I would like to happen. I’ve been searching for a new position in which it would be a remote role. My current company also said I am maxed out in term of what they are willing to pay salary wise.

He just got an offer from another company for an infra role but they need an answer in the next week. How do you guys suggest he push for a decision from his manager about the internal move. Should he tell his manager he has another offer?

I have a friend who was let go a few months into his first job after college (reason: the manager felt like he wasn't grasping the training content to the level that was expected). He's worried about if he should put the experience on his resume anyway, if he does will recruiters ask why he had such a short time at this place, and what will recruiters think if he explains he was let go. What are some things recruiters expect from candidates in this situation to continue considering them?
