I have recently cleared the loop at Google for a GCP Cloud Security Consultant role in India.
YoE - 10. Not sure about the job level yet. The recruiter has just sent me an "Offer review packet" spreadsheet to fill with salary expectations.
My two best current offers are:
- Prod sec engineering lead at an Eyecare giant - 57 LPA + 3.5 L joining bonus
- Lead sec engineer at a series D profitable HR tech startup - 60 LPA + 40 L ESOP vested over 4 years
How much should I ask for at Google ?

You’re a little off your rocker. Probably more like 140-160. Assuming this is not FAANG or a similar type company or PE.

Someone from McK posted this last week. Basically, it’s a tough spot to exit because companies want managers that have been managers/PL/EM before and your competition may have consulting + MBA + industry experience. In tends to level out by PL/EM/M.
Assuming, you’ve been promoted to Cwl with 6 months in that role, $180-200k (ie flat comp) would be a very good exit. If you’re a SAC, probably lower.
I exited at 2YOE to FANG for 180k in CA so I would assume that that is the ceiling. Smaller/private companies would expect to see a bit less.

3YOE corporate strategy roles at the F100 (not tech) I’m at is a senior analyst level gig paying between 105-120. You need to be a manager or slot into a manager role to get higher in our case.
I exited to corporate strategy at a big bank with 4 YOE. I was offered 135k base + 15% bonus... Although I don't think I'll all of that bonus lol.
I took the position in NYC, but moved to a medium cost of living city and still enjoy my full salary.
I should mention I came from like a tier 5 or tier 6 consulting firm lol. My client hired me full time and hooked it up
Is FAANG comp substantially better than smaller private tech/tech-adjacent unicorns? I would imagine it to be similar
Exactly, the big tech companies (FAAMG) are relatively easy to get and pay a ton - the startups that pay just as well hire generally much more selectively and in one-of spurts
My understanding is that at 3 YOE from Bain I’d likely be coming in at a manager level
Interesting, this is helpful context. For what it’s worth I’ve been talking to a contact at a mid size tech company in CA and was told I’d like be coming in at a manager level (from SAC), but it sounds like that’s not the typical expectation
If all of the above is true, once you hit Manager what do the exits look like for similar companies/functions?
Seems like consensus here is that the expectation should be around $150-190k for a FAANG-like company after 2/3 YOE
If you exit at the end of SAC tenure, do you consider that exiting as a C1? This wouldn’t be a mid-SAC year exit, it’s at the end of the contract. And can you expand more on the optics point, I know you mentioned it earlier? I ask because that’s an incredibly common exit point

The optics are that you were not promoted and were counseled to leave.
You could get that comp and maybe a manager role in BizOps or Strategy at a top SF tech firm (FAANG, unicorn startups, etc). I highly highly doubt you could get above 140 base at any more traditional F500 company and manager is also unlikely there.
