I’m not following. The whole point of website time is to allow you to continue holding yourself out as “employed” while you line up your next role. Everybody understands the fiction. Recruiters and firms see this all the time, and background checks generally aren’t going to reveal some fatal discrepancy that blows up your candidacy.
This is reassuring. I just didn’t want to be accused or caught in a lie later.

You’re overthinking this. Dust yourself off, apply widely, focus on getting the next job, and don’t disclose anything / worry about your current setup. This industry can blow, but you’ll be fine. Onto the next.
The firm does not call your current employer only past employers so you are good. Even if you are not working at your current employer the firm that you are applying to will assume you are still working there so they will not call.
How would a background check confirm such a thing?
I guess I am misunderstanding how the process works. I assumed that after an offer, the third-party background check entity would contact current employers to verify dates of employment. And then HR at my current employer would have to tell the truth and say I no longer work here (despite website optics)?
OP, have you confirmed with HR what they’re going to say in case someone calls them? I think it’d be really weird, i.e., defeat the entire purpose of website time, to give the earlier date. If they have confirmed or end up confirming they’d be providing the earlier date, do try to negotiate.
