Sorry to hear this, sounds like your manager is a poor leader and may have some resentment or jealousy on your promotion. (maybe they applied too and didn't get it!) Congratulations on your hard work. I'd say don't worry about it if you're not going to be directly reporting to that person anymore. If you are, I'd ask for feedback when you when you've made a mistake and they make those comments. What would they have done instead. Turn it around on them. That's a leaders job anyway. To guide and mentor you and be happy for your successes because it's their success as well.
Thank you, yes he is a poor leader and oftentimes we disagree on how he manages the team. We have also disagreed on business decisions... he is young and immature still. I actually have management experience at a prior company so it is very challenging to report to someone like him. I won't be reporting to him in the new role... I may still have to deal with him on certain projects though so I'm trying to maintain the peace as much as possible. The truth is he has already self sabotaged himself here and I hear this week they may take some responsibilities away from him.
This is a tough position to be in. I hope the best for you
Thank you, my office can be very toxic. I've been trying to remain professional, keep my head down and work hard.
Congratulations!!! The worse he acts, the better things will be for you. Just smile at him when he starts acting foolish.
Thank you for your support. It's hard to feel like it's in my head at this point... all these little sly remarks are adding up.
I've learned by this point in life... if your gut/instincts are telling you something.. they are probably right. Thank you for the positive feedback.
Congrats on the new position! Stay focused and keep pushing! If you make a mistake, and that individual has something to say next time, ask him what could you have done better or different to not make that mistake? If he’s a leader he will lead with honesty if he isn’t then……. Either way, he didn’t give you the promotion nor did he earn the new position for you! So believe in yourself and let what he says roll off your back! Greater to come to those who learn to block the negative and focus on the positive and what’s to come! I wish you the best! Shine bright like a diamond.
Bless you! 🤗
Does your company have a mentoring program. May be good for you to get a mentor so if you have concerns/questions you can go to your mentor and wouldn’t need/care for your current managers suggestions.
Exactly what I am doing, thank you my friend.
Mentor
I’ve been there. Remember two things - 1) he is no longer your manager. So, take his advice with a grain of salt. There is always truth you can learn from when someone is in their feelings. 2) remember you are learning. You are going to make mistakes. You already have the job. Someone thought you could do it. So, you don’t have to prove you belong. The job says you belong there.
A good book to read is crucial conversations.
Look for a mentor higher up in the company or in a different “wing” of the company so that you can get some real feedback that isn’t tied to your history. (Even outside the company works can work as well)
Thank you for the book recommendation, I will look into it. I've had to read some books to cope with difficult colleagues here before lol.
My office can be a very toxic work place.
It was such a minor mistake, I didn't update something... he is nitpicking... I do more work than him lol. Anyways, I hear this week he will be getting responsibilities taken away from him. I'll keep everyone posted. Thank you for your kind words
Keep on poking the bear while you still can. Enjoy it and let his true colors come out to all.
Always respond positively. "THANKS FOR THE CATCH! Were such a good team." Or " yikes, you've really been on me lately. Is everything okay?"
Even a joke like "I learned from boss".
