Speaking from experience here…
You don’t seem to have coping mechanisms in place to help you. The long term answer is that you need therapy, not a coach.
I ignored the pharma side of the issue my whole life and worked on building coping mechanism. Eventually, none of them worked anymore. Then I started taking medication, and suddenly my coping techniques started working again. When I combine both of those with a clean diet and just a little bit of exercise, I feel almost super powered.
Covid + several family medical issues, knocked me off my food and exercise path, but medication + coping techniques are helping me take the steps to get back on track.
Thank you for the response. I think this is the next step for me. I appreciate the guidance and with you luck on your own journey.
I’ve been there OP. Every situation is unique, but some steps that worked for me:
— Revised sleep schedule. I started going to bed much earlier and waking up earlier. This was difficult and took some time to adjust, but eventually I did. If your first meeting is at 8 and your biological clock becomes accustomed to waking up at 6, then even if you oversleep an hour, you won’t be in danger.
— Morning routine. I saw you posted about a previous workout routine. Get back into it! It’s never too late to start back up. Starting your day with a morning workout, journaling, catching up on emails/work, etc. will help so that the meeting isn’t the thing you miss if you do oversleep.
— Later meetings. I adjusted my schedule/took on projects where my work day didn’t start until slightly later and I try to make sure my day never starts with a client meeting. Missing a 1:1 with a colleague or other meeting isn’t good, but not as critical as missing a client meeting.
I know it can be a struggle OP and can’t promise these will help, but they made life a lot easier for me. Best of luck!

Completely understand this is a health issue you’re dealing with, but there’s also the reality that if you can’t get it under control, you can’t do the job. You cannot regularly sleep through client meetings.
Good luck.
For how long have you been taking these meds and what kind ?
Also do you hear/feel any of these alarms you set or no?
I’ve been on meds since around senior year of uni too, so it’s been a while (around 10 yrs for me). My psychiatrist told me to set an alarm to take my meds and go back to sleep and set an alarm for 30 mins later to get up
Sounds like you need to set a hard time for sleep and awake hours and stick to those times even for the weekend (for now). Like bedtime by 12, awake by 7. And make no exceptions about it - as soon as you hear those alarms you need to get up and get your a** moving.
I worked at a B4. And, if I can answer your question the way I experienced the life of management consulting, yes I do believe that your issue may affect and delay your promotion. Promotions are for top top top performers. It’s cut throat. Make it or leave. My advice to you: exit into a role you’re happy with and search for a team that understands and supports you. No B4 will support you and help you grow if your issue interferes with your performance. Sorry dude. Good luck 🍀
Thank you for the response. For the first 1.5 years at the firm I would say I was considered a top performer. My metrics are good and all aligned in the higher echelon with my peers. I have good relationships with everyone I work with — it doesn’t happen with everyone. It’s happened twice with clients, only once or twice with some internal meetings that were non-essential.
I’ve been told I was on partner track before, but I get your point and appreciate the feedback. I know it takes years to build a reputation and only one mistake to ruin it. Thank you again.
You seriously need to see a doctor.

Is there someone in your life willing to call you in the morning? When I was single, my dad would call me every morning at 8am to make sure I was awake for work. Helped me a ton.
Additionally, I switch up the noises/sounds of the alarm in my phone. Its currently ducks quacking. It’ll switch to chimes next.

Maybe those things can help if your not do it?
Have overslept client meetings before, once or twice. Had to play it off as either family emergency, or just no response (at advice of coach), but what does this mean for my career? Coach is aware of the above — will anyone care about this when it comes time for promotions?
I feel like over the last 6 months it has definitely compounded, maybe from depression — but I don’t take meds for that and I don’t want to. I never have and never plan to.
Just looking for some guidance for anyone who might have gone through something like this before or have any advice/feedback.
Thank you in advance.
Take magnesium, talk to a therapist , take your ADHD meds consistently, drink a crap load of water. You got this!
Are you on sleep meds? You could easily have hypersomnia
Why not start going to the gym again? Gyms are all open
I have the same issue (but never overslept before). Id recommend starting a routine if you can and never taking your medication after 1 pm. If you do then I hope it’s all all nighter or instant release (4-6 hours max). If I were to take vyvanse at 5 pm, I’d be a wreck when trying to sleep.
As for the insomnia, it might be the timing of the medication or the stress of the next day, perhaps? As far as your career, it’s going to be very hard to come back from this reputation-wise depending on who knows about it. Does all of this happen during vacation when you aren’t taking anything?
In addition to seeing a doctor, have you tried speaking with a performance / career coach? Feel free to send me a DM. I’m 15yrs Big4 and have been coaching young professionals
