I think leaving is totally a fine option. On the other hand, trying to talk things out with that partner might be a good option too. Unfortunately, if you want the practice of law to change, you either need to do it as an equity partner or as a client. I chose to leave a racist firm before, but I admit that it's going to take a lot of people to stay and gain power for some type of change to happen. Ultimately, I decided to take care of myself rather than try to change the system. I'm working on being a powerful client now.
I had the same experience… and I stuck around. The cool partner in my case was the head of the dept. it was awful while the unfair partner was around and I sometimes think I should’ve left. Totally messed with my mental health. I stayed because the unfair partner left for maternity leave. I ended up becoming a star associate for the other partner who took me when they left the firm for a diff one. And now I no longer work with the mean partner.! Not saying you should stay but sharing a story about how things surprisingly turned around for me. Proud of you for thinking about what’s best for you!!
If you are rattled by someone raising their voice in a way that is disrespectful one time, you should probably not work at any law firm.
I would expect that every single private practice lawyer has experienced what you’re describing at sometime or another, from a client, from a colleague, etc. This isn’t a warm and fuzzy environment. You will need a relatively thick skin to make your career at any law firm.
I would strongly discourage you from damaging your career by leaving anywhere in less than a year. You are shooting yourself in the foot.
If you’re OK with tanking your legal career and potentially leaving the practice of law, and want to work somewhere with a much softer side, you may be comfortable working at a nonprofit.
Totally agree. It isn’t and shouldn’t not be the norm. But people are gruff, terse, etc from time to time. I just think that’s the nature of the beast. Not everyone wants to tolerate any amount of rudeness, but if that’s the case I truly would not work at a law firm. Heck, even good clients can be tough to deal with sometimes.
I respect your decision you are making for your wellbeing. I assume you are posting it because you are inviting different perspectives, so I’ll give my take, but in no way is it a critique of your choice. I just stopped working with people who mistreated me at my firm. If the person is not giving me substantial work anyway, I would just stop working with them totally. Short of firing me - nobody was pushing me out of my spot. Over the years, I’ve worked for people that other people have said “I don’t know how you could stand working with that person.” Most of the time, I never noticed the person was problematic because I know how to solve problems. Best of luck in your next role and the one after that. This industry is not known for cool people.
I would be leaving under a year though. Any thoughts?
Yet if firms are willing then what does it matter.
Is this firm DLA Piper?
The DLA troll in this bowl strikes again…
I’m so sorry you experienced this.
Context:
For starters: my legal assistant is really useless and she creates more work for me. Shes disregarded deadlines and court filings and just does things at her convenience.
I needed motions filed. My legal assistant was out, number two option was out and number 3 option was also out. At this point, I say fuck it and I chose to file the motions on my own to make a court deadline. Worse case I am thinking I can get reimbursed for the filing fees.
I get the motions filed and the next day I wake up to all types of bull shit on how I failed to follow firm protocol by not utilizing my legal assistants.
I come into the office and that’s when he raised his voice at me. Like I said, I was hoping to stay longer but naw. I am out.
