Atk, some thoughts: 1. Offer expertise in that particular product area. For example, if it's a company like Blue Apron, sell your expertise in consumer goods, food, logistics. At the end of the day, this is about product development, and knowing that market really helps. 2.) Accept that you might not land in a Facebook or google right away, but if you truly believe that PM is right for you, devote 1.5-3 years to a PM role at a notable, funded, later stage startup. The recruiting bar is lower and you'll get to do some serious PM work, cut your teeth during a crucial growth period and be a serious player in a smaller pond. You'll very much be recognized for your contributions and you will be able to jump to a blue chip company after that, or enjoy your spoils as a major contributor to a startup. A good place to look for roles in these types of notable startups is to dig around the websites of major VCs - not only is it a good way to find startups that really speak to you but a great way to understand what's being done in your area of interest. Hope that helps!
BizOps, maybe. PM, you better know your shit on the engineering side. 9/10 PMs have an engineering degree and/or experience.
Depends. 3 years into Accenture, Google approached me. I decided to stay at Accenture, though.
What level are you anyway? Based on your post, I'd guess you're an analyst/sr. analyst?
Ignore the haters. Just at least know sql and be a good problem solver, and keep up with the industry - so don't rely on any lame IT pmos you've done to be a source of expertise. Have plenty of PM friends from Bain, BCG. (My husband is engineering manager at a big tech company so I know the works well.)
Thanks everyone - I'm finishing up my MBA and deciding whether to take the AS offer or try to get a PM role
@SA1, I have built some experience working with SQL and R. But how do I get that PM interview? Is it through networking or are some companies more open to consultants making the switch?? Thanks!
OP - definitely go after a PM role through campus recruiting. It's 10x easier than going through connections 2 years down the road
Thanks SA1, very helpful!!!
I've been at ATK only a year and got a call from Facebook yesterday. It is relatively easy for us to get considered for analytical, biz ops or customer success roles but when I mentioned product management, I didn't hear back from the recruiter!
Thanks everyone!!
How much do Product Managers make btw? I know it depends on size of co., etc. but curious for a range. AS' offer package is really tough to walk away from
