If statewide policy calls for all employees to report into the office 4 days a week - should the DEI officer also be held to the same schedule?

I think what might be missing from this conversation is accommodation needs. Pre-pandemic some folks required WFH days as a medical accommodation and perhaps this individual has one of those cases. Individuals do not need to disclose their accommodation requests to the broader team as it is private medical information. This may be the case but might not be but either way something to consider.

I would think so. Deviating from the schedule the rest of the team is following could alienate the DEI officer, when they should instead be considered an integral part of the team. Maybe I'm wrong, but it would seem to send the wrong message in my opinion.

Yeah that sounds ridiculous, if its required then everyone has to do it. That's the whole meaning of 'required'. Besides as it's already been pointed out the DEI officer should not be separating themselves from the team, if anything they should be at the forefront of new policies.

1000%. They are an employee. DEI is not meant to be interpreted as special treatment.

I’m confused, why would DEI be excluded from any company policy?

I’m stating, this is the only exec. leadership position in the entire agency of 2000+ employees that is working 24 hours a week from home as a FTE. I guess that’s one heck of a medical accommodation!

I love teaching art but am having to teach remotely to 1150 kids, k - 5. Have about 54 amazing elementary art teachers in my district that share SO much! I could retire (34 yrs), but just don’t want to because I love what I do! I just asked a creative to include more pictures of Afro-Latinos in our hispanic messaging and she said "I tried to find pictures of videos that looked authentic but they didn't have the right look, it's a very specific look". In honor of National Voter Registration Day, The New Yorker released the transcript of a previously unpublished interview with James Baldwin, who gave a first-hand account of "Freedom Day 1963," a Black voter-registration drive in Selma, Alabama. Baldwin's descriptions from that day are so vivid and detailed that you can feel the fear and anger of the event. If you have a couple of minutes, I highly recommend you read it.

General question: Is there any room in corporate America for real, actionable DE&I discussions and initiatives? I've observed so many corporate versions become an advertising strategy (SM posts, diversity reports) without doing the actual work (increasing representation in senior leadership, salary analyses, having an effective reporting system for bias). Is this just how it is?

I am being tapped to translate documents at work. I’ve done spot translation audits, and 1 larger Quality assurance document earlier this year, but was recently contacted about a potential large-scale translation initiative for next year.

Has anyone been compensated for these sorts of projects that would be “out of scope” for their role? How do you go about asking for compensation? Have any of you spun out and created translation service side-gigs?

Working at a company and they can’t seem to hold on to their female, black and people of color employees. I blinked and 3 of the people who were in my onboarding class were either fired or they left. For context I’ve been in company less than a year and there are people who have been in the company 25yrs. I’m thinking of cutting loose before it gets to my turn.

Latinx - help! We used this term in our diversity spotlight discussing Hispanic Heritage Month. One individual said that in English a group of Latinos would just be Latins to be gender neutral. I understand the word is controversial but is “Latins” grammatically correct? I assume we should just say Latin Americans, but trying to understand if Latins is also accurate.

Hi all,

My boss makes jokes about me being from a different country whenever there is a work meeting or a gathering with coworkers, even though he knows where I am from. This usually occurs when I meet new work-related people or for example if I am in a situation that involves ethnic related subjects.

What is this? This is normal?

Stereotyping?
Racism?

The first time I ignored that, but now it has become a pattern and is bothering me now. I am south-American working in the UK.
