I think it depends where specifically in the area you live. My fiancé and I used to live in Ballston (Arlington) and had no issue making friends, especially just our walking our dog or in our building. We moved out to a townhouse community in Fairfax during the pandemic and it’s a total snoozefest. Nothing but young families and old retired couples, and no one is friendly unless you have kids and your kids are friends.
The trick is living somewhere where raising a family is not the only thing people are interested in- which isn’t the suburbs.
So my advice to you would be to move to a walkable part of Arlington or DC. The concentration of younger people without kids is going to be magnitudes higher than what you’ve experienced in Fairfax, and that will inherently make it easier to make friends.
Rec league sports? Idk, the sprawl in NoVa doesn’t help too much. I know if I didn’t have roommates and rent I would probably try to invite anybody I think seems cool to a dinner party or over for drinks
That’s a great question. I recently started asking people in my network if they have any friends here that I could meet. I haven’t followed through on that yet, but I feel like meeting someone while having one mutual connection means we are likely to have at least some common interests or might get along.
Quality friends are really hard to make and require decades of investment. You will always be walking on egg shells with new friends. It’s not even worth the drama tbh. Your couple counterpart is your best friend now. That’s just the reality.
