initially san fran - the metro system is better and its a more walkable city. but thanks to the tech bubble, the culture has been completely stripped away from that city, the homeless run rampant, and crime rates are only rising.
so LA is my top choice. it remains to be absolutely gorgeous, better weather, and culture can be found in every corner of the city.
the mantra in LA - Live close to where you work.
god speed
Wherever you go, don’t call it San Fran.
LA mostly for the little bit of cost savings over SF
Depends on what you want. I’ve lived in both cities plus the east coast. In SF now.
LA: better weather, more culture, more creative, some pretty good agencies. It’s warm and sunny every day - I miss it a lot. But unless you work in Playa Vista and live in Marina Del Rey (or a similar situation) you’ll waste your life in traffic. It also takes a long time to get out of LA during the weekend. Traffic everywhere.
SF: Mild weather all year round, walkable east coast like city, dependable public transport, lack of culture but still lots of young and cool people (just less than before), 30-45 minutes away to amazing hikes, beaches etc (Muir Woods, Sonoma, Napa, Point Reyes), lots and lots of jobs especially in tech (hello stocks and work/life balance). People in SF are pretty awesome. Found it way easier to make real friends here than in LA.
It will be good no matter where you end up. Good luck!
+1 for LA.
LA is a city. SF is a town where all the intelligent people work in tech so Advertising talent is quite anemic.
LA is way more affordable The weather makes up for the strip malls and high ways and lack of walking. SF is freaking beautiful but so so many homeless and expensive. The ad game is hard in LA right now and the opportunity in SF is unparalleled. I’ve lived in both and honestly it’s really hard to say. Go where the best job is and what your end goal is
SF has gotten really douchey thanks to the tech bros. I used to be on team NorCal but I think if I had to pick now I’d go LA.
AD 1, the mantra in LA is ABSOLUTELY NOT live close to where you work... unless where you work is also the part of town you love most. Reason being OP, LA is so decentralized it’s crucial that you set up near the places and things you really like so you don’t end up spending what precious free time you have getting to and from those places and things.
Almost everyone (in advertising) who moves to LA has some romantic notion of living by the beach, but the west side caters to a very specific type of person. It’s either your thing or it’s not. And you’ll know right away...
So if you choose LA, do your research and find the neighborhood you like. It’ll save you from making the first-year mistake that plagues most transplants
Thank you everyone for your help! I’m constantly blown away by how helpful everyone is on here! Definitely feeling like LA is the right move for me, everything everyone has mentioned is why I’m looking for (except for the traffic but I grew up in a place where a car was mandatory)
I’d know no one in either. Coming from east coast
I found it hard to make real friends in LA. You connect with people at parties, at work, etc., then they ghost you. Weather is a huge plus and so is proximity to beach, hiking, skiing, camping. Whenever I’ve gone to SF I’ve enjoyed the chill vibe and felt the people were more down to earth. I guess I’m not really sure why I live in LA. 🤔
LA sucks. Unless you like living in a giant suburb. SF rules.
LA is the shit. Live where you work. Enjoy the weather. Enjoy creativity oozing from every alley. Ignore the dbags
SF - you’re surrounded by stupid beautiful earth in every direction. Easily accessible. You don’t waste your life in traffic. Tech bros suck but they aren’t *everybody*. Costs are slowly going down. I love it here.
la. san francisco sucks.
La is one of the worst markets for advertising right now. Chicago is number 1 followed by SF in terms of who is hiring. I should know because I just left la after a rigorous search across the country. It's gonna be a few years until la agencies get their shit together.
SF is disgusting. It's one big hobo camp.
@OP, I’m looking to make the same move. So stalking this post. Just out of curiosity, are you making the move first and then looking for a job? Or did you secure a job first? If so, please teach me your ways!!!!!
Takes time to get used to the city, usually people end up loving it after a year or two.
I just moved to LA from Chicago. I chose it over San Fran for the cost savings. I love it! Plus, you clan get your dose of San Fran whenever you want with it being so close!
