Meet your hours, if you can. You can coast and meet hours. Don't burn bridges.

Respectfully I really dislike this question. Especially early in your career you should be learning everything you can and making as many relationships as you can. Unless you plan on joining a monastery or living in a van down by the river after you leave, knowledge, skills, references, and relationships are foundational and essential. Coasting would waste a really valuable opportunity.

A1, that’s excellent advice. Truly. But you can do everything you said and still perform at a high level in any law firm and any practice. The issue here is what “coast” means. I gave it a more negative read.
Entirely separately, the devil/angel thing evokes a happy memory from my childhood - the 1960 Flintsones episode that debuted Fred and the influences on his shoulders.
“Coasting” to me means just doing what’s asked of you without being proactive and putting just enough effort to make your quality of work OK/average. And absolutely not caring about kissing partners’ ass

yea, I absolutely enjoy working with people like that 🙄

As people have said, aim for the middle if you see work hard and coast as opposites.
