I would rather perform gall bladder surgery on myself than sub as my primary job. I have to do enough of it now in my regular gig. The paycheck isn't close to big enough to put up with that kind of torture.
Rising Star
Well, you do have a point there! lol
I think it should be mandatory for teacher program instructors to sub in elementary and secondary classrooms. I know that is different from your post but it made me think of it.
It sounds like the author of the article is having a positive experience with subbing and that they must be working in a nice district with mostly nice kids. She must be treated well by teachers and staff. It needs to be like that everywhere to attract and keep subs who want to keep subbing. We have a hard time attracting and keeping subs here. Low pay, disrespectful students, heavy special needs, stressed out teachers and paras who are too wrapped up in getting through the day to slow down and be kind… it is not an appealing job to most people. Would I sub? Yes, in the right district with good working conditions if I was financially in a place where I could work for the low pay. I like the kids and I like helping other teachers. Would I sub where I work now? No way.
I admire that college professor! Subbing might feel like a step back for some, but I see it as an opportunity to grow and contribute. I’d do it in a heartbeat.
Subbing is the best for laid off teachers because it provides flexibility to go to interviews and at the same time providing an income.
Yes, if I could not find another job. Why not? I just wouldn't sub at any junior high schools.
If you’re getting layed off from a teaching job, then you are probably not going to make it as a sub. Being a sub is 10x harder psychologically with no support
If you find yourself in that situation, get out of education. If you stay in education then ‘pick your poison’ ….teach high school where 1/100 students are sociopaths that can weaponize their behavior to take you down, middle school where sociopath and narcissistic behavior starts, or elementary school where confused parents make you give extra attention to their child who is being raised by a sociopath and that student will act out by destroying your class physically.
In each situation the leadership will say: how can we support you, make your expectation better
I do have my answer and that is have audio recordings of all interaction with admin using text to speech software. Check you state laws but most allow you to record meetings, evaluations, general conversations.
Had an assistant principal lay the grounds to put me on an improvement plan until I showed leadership some compromising audio recordings of him disparaging the students. Now he treats me like a king.
