It’s just a level, don’t be so literal
Relax “counsel”
Ok “IBM” 🫡 😂
Chief
It's a level...
They don't make movies...
Depends on the department and structure, but oftentimes directors lead strategy and/or run projects. There can and should be ways to advance a career without people management.
There are also directors who lead managers.
That's how my company is supposed to work.
Strategy, large scale projects/programs and change management. Some companies have realized that not everyone is meant to manage people. Leading people and managing people can be very different things. Just because someone isn’t great at managing people doesn’t mean they can’t contribute significantly by leading teams or value drivers in an organization.
I’m a senior director who currently has no direct reports. But as others have indicated can be the case, I’m directing a core technology strategy for a quarter of our >15,000-person company. Plus my role is new and I will be hiring/adding a few folks to my team this year, so I will be managing people again soon.
It really is just a level, used more to indicate expected scope of impact than to imply people management.
I’m confused. Why is Revenue Ops bad?
The idea of revenue operations is not bad. I’ve just never seen a director of revenue ops that contributed value in a way even remotely commensurate with their pay. And they’re also usually insufferable.
Individual contributors. As someone mentioned, it's just a level.
Banks hand out the title “VP” to anyone who can write 3 working lines of code in a 9 hour workday. I’ll say what everyone else has: it’s just a level.
Same thing I'm partnering with -- money. It's a title that provides certain pecuniary benefits, likely profit sharing (something partners and directors get) as opposed to only getting discretionary bonuses (something given to managers and counsel).
Perhaps strategy or something like that but I hear what you're saying
Directors are individual contributors; managers manage people — so says my friend’s company.
