Dont take yourself out of the game on being able to find a job AND get maternity leave! Many agencies/brands have eliminated tenure requirements on leave, and even for those you haven’t you can negotiate leave (even if not a full 3 months) once you have an offer in-hand.
I’m sorry your facing this uncertainty while pregnant. I know that’s stressful, but I you still have time time to work through options.
I have done this and have known others that have done it as well.
First of all, congratulations! I’m sorry this pregnancy already comes with so much uncertainty and stress. Given what you’ve shared, I’d stay at your job as long as possible. Do you have health insurance through your job? If you do get let go, I would try to freelance and bank as much money in the meantime as possible.
Maybe some other moms here have advice or have job openings at their companies?
Wanted to add: just found out in an orientation meeting that Publicis Groupe offers employees 12 paid weeks of family leave and you’re eligible from day 1. DM me if you see anything at PG you’re interested in and I can refer you!
From personal experience, I know this stress and how bleak this can feel. With my first baby, I was laid off at 5 mos pregnant. (They did know I was pregnant and I considered legal action but it would have affected my access to healthcare until the lawsuit was resolved. Financially, I was scared to death about the impending medical costs.) I tried to find a job but I think my apprehension about the circumstances just affected how I presented myself. I ended up doing COBRA and not taking a new role until I was 5 mos postpartum.
During my second pregnancy, I was offered a new role and took it it when I was 7 mos pregnant. I qualified for 12 weeks 100% paid leave after the first 30 days of employment. I gave birth early so i actually was only there 6 weeks before I was out. The agency was amazingly supportive and my manager told me that my leave was a ‘short term circumstance’ and he was hiring for the long-term needs of the business.
There are employers out there who don’t view pregnancy as a drawback, but recognize those workers have super-powers. You got this!
Thank you for sharing. Did you mention your pregnancy at a certain point in the interview process? Or wait until you actually started the job?
Congrats on the baby. Are you happy at your current agency? If you are not, make the move now. Many agencies will honor the mat leave.
If you are happy, is there someone you can talk to openly about it?
Either way, update your resume and be ready. Start making connections and putting feelers out there.
Congrats!! Here what I would do: announce your pregnancy to your boss and let HR know. Don’t change jobs. Anything could happen and you don’t know the future. Ad agencies need PMs. If they do cut you - you have an excellent negotiation point re severance - your pregnancy and need for healthcare.
