weighing career change options is largely being driven by my expectation that consulting will be rendered obsolete by AI. Not really looking to debate the topic, just trying to be wise and plan for the future.
I want to be able to have a family and mortgage with some sense of stability and I don't think I'll find it in our line of work
Instead of Dentist - look into CRNA. Get a RN license in 2 years, work as a ER nurse and go to CRNA program.
One of my friends was an engineer for a few years after college. Now, he's a dentist and likes it.
The only downside that he mentioned is having your hands in people mouths all day.... haha, so make sure you consider that.
He also works 4 days ~10 hours, which i would take in a second over 5 day work week.
Also, if you need prerequisite classes, see if you can take some at community college at night before you quit your job.

If you like the dental career, go for it! But try not to stack up too much debt. You might look into rural dentist programs that pay your way in exchange for working in BFE for a while, or perhaps military reserves. You’ll be 33 starting your practice, could easily work 30 years, but you don’t want to have debt sandbags hanging on you.
I know who someone who did that in 30s.. I also know two people who became successful doctor in their 50s .
I just saw a story about a lady who became a Dr in her 70s. Live yer life!

I went back to school much later than that and earned degrees from two top-10 schools. The 2008 financial crisis served as a forcing function, but it was 100% worth it for me.

The money is in a roll up strategy of buying dental offices and having the dentists and specialists as w2
A dentist?!! You're an elf. You make toys.

You’ll likely have a lot of lower back pain if you choose the dentist route. Most dentists also have a lower pay ceiling than your current trajectory. 4 years of dental school + training to make ~$170k doesn’t sound that enticing to me.
You are 27. And Have a 30+ year work life ahead of you. Pursue something that makes you happy and gives you the life and lifestyle you wish to live.
I know of Doctors and RNs who are now in consulting. A friend quit her job in tech to write childrens books. So there is no one path or direction. Write the pros and cons on a piece of paper. Sleep on it for a week and then make a choice. Best wishes!
