Make friends with some Moms. Then maybe your wife will stop suggesting you find people to play with. :-)
35. Haven’t made a close friend in like 5 years. It’s not easy.
A local dad started a giant text chain of ~18 neighborhood dads (I’m in Evanston IL). We get together once a month on Tuesdays from 8:15-10:30pm and it’s great. IDK if we’ll be best friends or anything, but it does create nice opps to get out of the house and random invites to see a band or to a random event.
If I had to start over, I would try to quickly build a proximity-based dad pack because it’s easier than having close friends.
I also love the car community. Not as tied in as I once was but it is nice to have automatic friends on Saturday or Sunday mornings. I think it would be the same with any hobby.
What is this thing called “friend” of which you speak?
Are you involved in any clubs outside work ? Sports, religious, school etc… Best way to network and make friends
I joined my local car club. They have DIY days where we meet at a garage. Most of the people are 55+ but there are a couple of younger guys I’ve started hanging out with otherwise. It’s actually really nice because they don’t talk about work at all.
No time for sports clubs etc and I too have no friend’s. About to change all that
That’s great to hear. How do you find the time to change it?
Totally hear you on this! It’s a work in progress for me, but a few “lead gen” sources from me have been parents of kids friends (play dates, birthday parties, school events), got invited to a poker night by a neighbor, husbands of couples that my wife and I go out to dinner with (mostly driven by wife being a friend of hers).
I miss that about consulting. I left for PE Ops and now I’m just a remote do it guy. There are some dads in the neighborhood, but it’s hard to step away and find time to hang with them.
I feel you, same boat, keep doing the play date thing for kids, but kids are too young so that time is just chasing kids rather than making friends.
Wish I could find the freetime I had a decade or two ago, sports, work, chill, etc. Now when I'm not working it is just house/family maintenance. Hope you find a solution so I can live vicariously. If NoVa say hey!
I’ve made a decent number of friends from my kids sports teams - local dads in the same boat, and we’ll occasionally make the time to go play golf or grab a drink or whatever.
Same - it took a couple of years to get a real group going - usually helps if you find a fun activity for all the dads
