I’m a certified PE health teacher and we have recently moved to a small town in Nebraska. They have asked me to be a full time sub in 6-12 choir and band (only opening and they can’t find a Music teacher) I know nothing about band or choir. I’m reaching out to see if anyone has resources I can use or any help you may have. Thank you

So do you have any music training? I am a band director. Fine a method book: Essential Elements has a 3 book series that can help for beginners.
Do you have conducting experience? Do you have Marching Band? Is there an Elementary school music teacher that can help out?
How long is the sub position? Is the actual person able to set the program up. And you can run on auto pilot?

Why do they think you can adequately teach music? Why are they expecting someone trained in physical education to be qualified to teach this area? It would be like me, trained in music, to jump in and try to do your job. It would be awful for kids. Please know I am not criticizing you. I just don’t understand the thinking much of the time of administrators!

Hello 👋

After about 18 months of hustling, I’ve been offered my first AD role. My background is in engineering so for what feels like forever I’ve been building (and rebuilding) my book with creative work and it’s finally paid off 🎉

I want to hit the ground running so I’m trying to learn as much as possible before I start.

Can anyone recommend some books, shows, talks, social accounts etc that I can learn from?

Thank you!

Additional Posts in Music Educators

Greetings, heroic educators!
I am a conductor hoping to start a chorus that will focus on works by wonderful but often-neglected composers, so I thought some fellow music teachers might be interested. If you like to sing and are up for a challenge, I'd love to have you!
Although we will be rehearsing virtually to start with, of course, I hope someday we can get together in person; hence, I'm mainly looking for singers in the northeast NJ/NYC area. Please let me know if you are interested!

Someone once wrote of William Bligh, "God knows I never had any malice in my heart until I met this detestable brute."
I feel similarly about a music teacher at a different school in my district, who is not an administrator, but has decided to make himself one.
His particular talent is beating around the bush for hours without ever quite revealing what he wants you to do.
I have no idea how his students deal with it.

Hi, all! Does anyone have any advice for a student who refuses to participate and continues to interrupt the class? I’m not sure how to engage a student like this

So the most recent post was 6 weeks ago. Do people still come here? For those that teach wind instruments, and aren't running full classes, I'm wondering what a typical class looks like for you? Are you playing instruments? Can you play indoors? What are you working on?

Hi y’all,
I am resigning from my position. I don’t have a job secured yet, but I have a couple interviews lined up. I’m wondering if I should tell my admin tomorrow (before going on break) or wait until I have a job secured.
FYI: I found one document saying I need to give a 30 day notice and the employee handbook says 2 weeks to be in “good standing”.
Any advice would be helpful.

So I’m planning on leaving my position before school starts, but the application and interview process has been slow. At this point I’m afraid I won’t find a job until late July. Should I let my school now and let them post my job as an anticipated position? I’d hate for them to have to find someone last minute, but I also want to keep that school as a fall back just in case. Unfortunately, it’s a terrible position and there has not been a lot of interest in it in the past.

OK, so how complicated is it to do a virtual ensemble? How “techie” do the kids and I need to be? All suggestions welcomed. Thanks.

Anyone who knows you will be returning F2F: have your administratirs said what band/chorus classes can or cannot do when you return? I was told today at my school, there will be NO singing or playing instruments INSIDE of the building, and we're supposed to come up with ways to make that work.

For those with, or working on, Masters degrees, what major did you pick? I’m on my second semester of Music Ed, which is what my undergrad is in. Did you do music for both or something different?

Hi music teachers! How are you surviving? I’ve been teaching band and choir for a long time, but distance learning and Zoom has me stumped. I’m lucky to have a job, I realize. What are some things you’re doing in your virtual classrooms that your music students enjoy?
