I started an Ed Leadership but decided on Class #3 that being an administrator was not what I wanted to do in life. So I switched to a MA program in Secondary Ed at a local private college simply because it was more convenient for time and geography. The program schedule, geared toward teachers, included many, many 2-week “seminar” settings during the summer and Saturday classes throughout the year. The school also had a number of satellite campus sites available, so I sometimes had to travel 90 minutes per class session...which is what I would have had to have done for all classes for a music degree. For me, the diploma was more important than the course of study.
I am currently halfway through a masters in teaching with a certificate in special education. I just happen to be passionate about special ed and feel it will make me more marketable as either a music teacher (which I currently teach) or a gen ed teacher (which I am also certified to teach). I think you should pursue what your passion is and also what you feel will best further your career.
I just completed my Masters degree! Originally I wanted to major in Music Therapy, and possibly use it within my district or even as another career. However the program wasn't accommodating for those working full-time.. I ended up majoring in Music Ed.
I did my first Masters in Arts Management. I have passions outside the classroom and outside education that I wanted to learn and train for. It was a great decision for me. I’ve been able to work in some fun roles in professional arts organizations and its allowed me to become a strong fine arts leader in my current school district. I’m all about options and following what’s best for you! Best wishes!
Just finished summer 2 of MME, I have a BME already. I chose the program I’m in because of the focus on band directors and improving our daily needs as opposed to having to sit through a bunch of gen ed stuff again
BMus in composition and MEd in secondary education.
I had a 1/3 of my masters in El ed done when we moved and I decided to switch to MME. It was a good program and I learned a lot and I don't regret it. However, looking at the climate now, the wiser decision probably would have been to get a masters in something other than music, so that if my position is cut I would have something else to fall back on. Currently working on adding a K-4 certificate to my license - hoping that can be my safety blanket for the future.
