I’m a current proposal manager looking to transition into a UX Writer role. I have experience working with InDesign and am currently in Google’s UX certificate course. What do y’all suggest for someone looking to break into the industry? How did you get early projects (freelancing, school, work, etc.) to build up your portfolio? Thanks!!

Welcome to the industry! It can be tricky at first, but once you get going, I found the skies the limit.

When I first transitioned from print design to UX, I built my portfolio with personal projects and re-designs of other apps or sites to show my perspective and design process. I then utilized sites like Fiverr and Upwork to gain professional experience. After I had a blend of real-life work mixed in with personal work, I began applying for entry-level roles.

Now, as a hiring manager, I see plenty of portfolios of people starting that have just personal projects. So feel free to jump in whenever you can share your process and skills.

Looking for some advice on a career change. I work in a technical role and have well-developed soft skills. I want to transition to UX (w/ focus on accessibility). There are a lot of UX educational programs out there, some very new, e.g. Dribbble, and costs are all over the place - General Assembly is $15k (and full-time), CareerFoundry almost $8k, and then many others at a fraction of the price. Reviews also vary wildly. Are these more expensive programs worth the huge increase in cost?

After a long interview process, I had to decline an offer from Amazon. I was really excited, but they wanted to start me as an L4. I already have offers on the table $15,000 more then the possible top compensation an L4 can get.

I joined a project that had already started and the team already settled on creating a user journey map, even though none of them are designers or in ux. I also have no experience in this field as I'm a data engineer. The user journey map was for mapping out the process for tenants finding housing assistance, so not a technical product. Given this new field and type of work, I've been having a really tough time. Anyone mind sharing what helped get you through your first ux project?

I think I may have finally had it.

A couple of decades in this field and now I want to just walk away. The grind in tech is soul-destroying, and the vast majority of the time, coworkers outside of UX have no idea what it is, what it’s for, and how it’s applied. I’m at my wits end and the constant problem is a kind of “willful misunderstanding” of our process and value.

After wasting too many years on design immature companies, It’s senselessly depressing. I’ve given away too much of myself.
