You could also aim for a smaller legal team, usually at a late stage startup, where you’ll get a role like “corporate counsel” and do a mix of commercial and product work.
Legal team will be three. There’s a CLO, the other attorney below her is a regulatory specialist in a field relevant to the company’s products/work who I would not report to. The role I’m looking at is more generalist.
YMMV but generally yes. Very few biglaw practices do product counseling. Did your group do so? If not, going into commercial counsel role is a common way to get your foot in the door. The only risk is if you're CC for some random manufacturing company with zero exposure to SaaS or tech work.
Definitely possible to transition to PC at a smaller legal team. I’d avoid places like FAANG where you’ll be siloed and the transition will be more difficult. Some commercial counsel skills will be transferable
