I’m a rising 5th year in a tech practice group at a V5. I’m looking to make the jump in house. I’m getting traction with commercial counsel roles but have been told that product counsel roles are better for long term progression.

Is it common/a typical route to start in commercial counsel and jump to a product counsel role after having more YOE under your belt.

You could also aim for a smaller legal team, usually at a late stage startup, where you’ll get a role like “corporate counsel” and do a mix of commercial and product work.

Legal team will be three. There’s a CLO, the other attorney below her is a regulatory specialist in a field relevant to the company’s products/work who I would not report to. The role I’m looking at is more generalist.

YMMV but generally yes. Very few biglaw practices do product counseling. Did your group do so? If not, going into commercial counsel role is a common way to get your foot in the door. The only risk is if you're CC for some random manufacturing company with zero exposure to SaaS or tech work.

like

Definitely possible to transition to PC at a smaller legal team. I’d avoid places like FAANG where you’ll be siloed and the transition will be more difficult. Some commercial counsel skills will be transferable

yeah, product counsels essentially know all the commercial sticking points and can bring that knowledge to the table for product development. mix in some privacy and ai know how and ur good g

VOO. I predominantly use Schwab’s robo advisor and have consistently been 8% below S&P 500. (1) based on the historical performance of VOO, am I better off shifting all of my retirement and brokerage accounts to VOO? (2) how do I do that? How should I go about this? Liquidate all my robo advisors and then buy VOO? Hope you all don’t roast me too hard!

Advice appreciated: I want to sublease my apartment so that I can rent elsewhere and pay less. I had to move in a short amount of time and it was during the period where there was a high demand for housing, & leases everywhere were expensive so I signed what I thought was fairly cheap in comparison to what was out there. However I found something this month that will cut costs by 30%. How do I go about finding someone to sublease my place?

Is it awkward to bring up the possibility of annual merit raise (usually done at end of year) with my boss now? It seems the job market is cooling a bit and I might lose some leverage if I wait longer to bring this up, in case the economy turns for the worse. I’m in-house at a small company (60 people), started right out of law school about 5 years ago. We had a legal team of 5 then. Everyone has left and we just hired a new GC. I went from $70k to $100k a little over a year ago. I am expecting an offer from a firm doing business law work but think this might be an opportunity to go to my current employer and ask for a significant raise, with new offer in hand.
