I think it’s unlikely you can make the shift without taking a drop in pay at least in the short term.
Entry level techs without ASEs you will be lucky to make $50k. More than likely you would start as an oil tech and make less than $20 an hour. Even with years of training and working on diesels, they are paying $35?-! Hour and want 6 ASEs right up front. Each additional ASEs gets you an $1.20 hr raise. Without the 6 ASEs here they are at 25.00 hr with 5 years of diesel mechanic experience.

Do you have machining experience? Or do you want to build / restore cars vs doing engine/transmission/custom machine work? There is a lack of knowledgeable machinists and expected to get worse.
I recently read an interesting Facebook post from a guy/shop that does classic car restoration and it was a multi-paragraph rant on the state of the industry, poor aftermarket quality (e.g., cylinder heads) and the lack of machinists. Basically folks are retiring and few are taking up the trade. This seems like an interesting area to explore that would keep you very busy (and save your body).
