Sure. In house is a fundamentally different job than law firm work. Becoming a GC will depend much more on understanding how an in house department works and understanding how to service the business than gaining a few more years in a law firm (regardless of how “prestigious” that firm might be in a firm). Also, except in rare instances, a GC is a true generalist position. Some backgrounds may help you land a role in house and may have extra value in the company but you need a good working understanding of any legal area that is meaningful to your business to serve as GC. That’s why additional time in house is often a requirement.
