I had similar anxieties as you did. I’m currently an SEC attorney-advisor. In my group (and there’s only a handful of us), I have a supervisor and a supervisor to my supervisor. From my experience, they started me off with easier assignments with plenty of time to do them, and everything I did was reviewed by the higher up first. My supervisor also took time to explain and go through things, and answer any questions I had. I feel like in a few months, they gradually ramped up my workload when I started to get the “hang” of everything, although the complex matters are still passed to others more senior/experienced than I am.
I am from Big Law so even as I was learning (and learning more, in fact), it was a much better work/life balance and everyone seemed to reiterate that if I needed more time to work on things/my workload was getting too much, I should speak up. I haven’t done that yet but I feel comfortable doing so if it came to that.
Thank you!
Really depends on the position! My first gov job started very slow, my second was like drinking water from a firehose.
Thank you!
Just want to say I’m right there with you! Leaving biglaw in a couple months for an attorney advisor job (starting as a GS-14). I’m sick of biglaw but I’m still nervous about the unknown.
It definitely definitely depends on the agency/job, but I joined several years ago from Big Law and have been very happy with the transition. Much better hours, work-life balance, etc.
